OK. This is weird. As a lot of you know I have been having issues with getting working broadband connection since i live in the sticks.
Well, here is the thing. From my ONE cable provider in the area, I can get one way cable. Not like I've ever heard of that b4. Well, I talked to the dude last night and he said this is how it works:
Cable modem plugged into phoneline and cable wire, download is 600k over the cable and upload is 33k over the phone line. He told me that typically the upload speed was in fact around 30k. I think he might be on crack though. He also said that a 56k modem was like 56k. So I told him that duh, it was not 56kup, it is more like 3k up. So I really have no idea if he was just being stupid or if he really doesn't know anything.

I know it's ghetto cable, but it's like, my only other option at this point. I was wondering if any of you have ever heard of one way cable or had any experience with it? I've been googling it, but I can't find any good stuff and I don't trust what the company says about it because as we have learned big companies are typically lying sacks of poo.

That sounds like DSL to me.

DSL has different upload/Download speeds.

Super crappy if you ask me.

I though you were going to school down in FL? If you are would it be worth it?

dude. im in NJ right now. and im not leaving for like 6 months, so i need something here in NJ in the meantime. if you add the fact that i'm taking online courses and work online, there's no way around it, i need a highspeed connect.

hehe. and i had dsl in boston and liked it. :P ;)

p.s. (i'm not goin to school in FL anymore, i opted to finish my degrees online sos i can move to texas or wherever my fancy carries me)

cable doesn't run through the phone line it uses coaxial cable-

dsl does with an adapter coming out of the phone jack-

the numbers for dsl sound ok, but they aren't great

but that is definately dsl according to the whole phone line deal

nevermind. i just called and spoke with a different dude.
he said its like 40 kiloBOTS not kilobytes. which means like 4k up. which means that the guy last night didnt know wtf he was talking about.

because i told him i wanted to know transfer speed in kiloBYTES insteasd of kiloBOTS and he said that it was 33 kiloBYTES.

ugh.

screw it. i'm not getting it.

a kilobot is like 10x a kilobyte
so 33 K or 56K (which referrs to kilobot) is really 3.3 kpbs or 5.6 kbps (kilobyte)

Out of curiosity, I looked up the following terms (but I have found no definition for kilobot)...

8 bits = 1 byte

kilobit = 1024 bits

1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte

1024 kilobytes = 1 Megabyte

1024 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte

I think these people you are talking to, don't know what bandwidth actually is...

Can anyone verify these numbers for me? I'm pretty sure they are right, but as I said, these things confuse the heck out of me.

What you were talking about sounds very similer to Satalite service... Where you D/L using a satalite dish, but uploads go through your phone line via dial up. So maybe they were using a satalite dish in your area and were gonna split you off a chunk of it? Thats the only thing I could think of...

Rev your numbers are correct. :) Here is a link to a chart that goes into additional detail esp with dial up/dsl/cable speeds in case you are interested. :)

Red, call them up at different times of the day repeatly. Ask the same questions everytime, record your answers. At the end of the day, you can call them back and tell them they're dirty liars.

do what i do to upload. Burn everything on a cd, DRIVE to where the server is (may take a couple days/weeks).

Yup ... ain't never heard of a kiloBOT, and I've taken MANY classes in computer networking (I think I'd have come across it once or twice at least), and I ain't heard of no "one-way cable"

I say don't deal with these peoples! Stay away ...

I also say you should move in with me :) I have a nice fast connection here at school I'm willilng to share. If you do decide to move in, just warning you, you'll need to take the top bunk!

one way cable is a real thing, with upload through modem
