dont think there is actually a way to switch on and off the tool options, but i can tell you some nice selection methods that kinda used the same principle.

Soulty's tips for the day

1:
hover over the object you want to select then hold down ctl and click once with the left mouse button. this should select the object positioned under your mouse.

2: (best for multiple objects in layers , when trying to select lower layers)

With the Move tool selected ( press v) right click on the area where you want the select the object , this will bring up a list of the layers positioned under the mouse. from there you can select which layer you want to become active.

1-you can select layer and linked with another by hold SHIFT and click with the move tool ;) .
2-select the layer you want by hold ALT and change the layer selection by "[ or ]" ;) .

Soulty's tips for today
maybe not tomorrow

1:

Select a layer with methods mentioned above, hold down ctl and use the "[ or ]" keys to move your layer up or down in the layer stack, you can also use shift- ctl - "[ or ]" to move the layer to the very top or bottom of your layer stack.

2:

With the move tool activated and a layer activated if you hit your numerical keys on your keyboard you will adjust the opacity of the layer, be wary though when a tool is selected that has opacity that instead will be adjusted...eg... gradient tool.

my last for today cause i gotta go.

1:
best used with selection.. with a selection hit Ctl - j to copy selection to new layer or hit Ctl - shift- j to cut to a new layer.

2:
To access sub tools in the tools pallet.. Say you want to use the circle marquee and the one that is active is the square tool, "M" on the keyboard would select the tool but if you hit shift M this will select other tools available in this catergory. same goes for L for laso (freehand, magnetic, point) and other tool that follow the same situation eg... direct selection, point path selection (A).. one that i use alot.

Quick question regarding .soulty's last tip #2. If i hit shift-m it only switches between sqaure and circle, not square, circle, vertical 1px, horizontal 1px. BUT, the lasso tool switches between all of them. I'm using photoshop cs, anyone else have this problem?

fasterthanlight, you can only switch between the circle and square marquee .. if you expand the tool you wiil notice only those two have a m on the right of them.. im not too sure but you might be able to adjust this in the keyboard shortcuts section under edit.

prstudio: your right, double click on windows to open up a file (or get the open file dialog box) and hold down ctl and double click to "create" a new document. ;)
