Coffee Reduces the Risk For Type 2 Diabetes and Alzheimer’s Disease

Every day, millions of Americans start the day with a cup of coffee and they drink it mostly for the same reason.

My attitude's not real good until I've had some coffee in the morning," said a coffee drinker. But aside from a jolt of energy, there now may be other reasons to drink coffee.

"Several years ago, the message was, 'oh no, caffeine is bad, bad, bad'," registered dietitian Lona Sandon. "Now more research has come out and that doesn't seem to be the case."
Coffee is actually a complex brew, containing antioxidants and other chemicals that have health benefits. Researchers at Harvard say coffee lowers the risk of Parkinson's disease and might prevent gallstones in women. Additionally, European researchers say coffee might reduce the chance of type-2 diabetes and Alzheimer's disease.

It turns out that sipping coffee might even help you burn a little fat. "Caffeine has been shown to mobilize, open up, our fatty acid stores, allowing us to break down fat and use that for energy," Sandon said. However, for all of coffee's possible benefits, there is just as much research about its negative side effects. For instance, studies have long shown that caffeine in coffee is addictive.

Sandon says moderation is the key. "We hear that about food. We hear that about exercise and we definitely hear that about caffeine," she said. Dietitians also advise keeping an eye on what you add to your coffee. Some gourmet drinks loaded up with flavored syrups and whipped cream can have as many as 500 calories and 40 grams of fat.

I think maybe I'll drink a cup or two. I'm not a huge fan of coffee, but hearing about this - and knowing my family's medical history with diabetes - perhaps adding a cup every now and then wouldn't be so bad

gevalia.com is the way to go!

just sign up, you'll get a free (very nice BTW) coffee maker, filters, and a starter set of coffee. Then you simply cancel after you rec'd the shipment, and you have a $40 coffee maker for the price of a pound of coffee...

plus, you still get to drink the coffee.

My machine has a digital timer, so if I remember to set it up, you will wake up to the smell of coffee brewing. It was a nice feature when I worked in an office.

serious. I've gotten about 3 or 4 machines from Givalia over the years...

What kind of world dictator falls to a disease such as diabetes!

They usually crumble from such horrid things as male pattern baldness!

oh no, i can't drink much coffee or i'll feel sick in the chest area and get these headaches.... i mostly drink tea without milk and sugar....

green tea helps weight loss and prevents heart diseases.
Black tea prevents certain kind of cancers....
green, black and oolong tea also helps boost the activity of insulin, the hormone that controls blood sugar levels.

personaally, i prefer oolong coz it has the best from both green and black tea.

I must admit, I have gotten into the habit of having coffee every morning...

Luckily, I can get good, flavored beans (right now I'm drinking Chocolate Raspberry) for about $3.50/lb. I don't like sugar in my coffee, so flavored beans is the way to go for me...
