I've been installing Slackware 9.1 on one of my old computers for the last couple of hours. I am a complete n00b to Linux, so can someone please help me out.

As it installs the "packages" which as I understand it are the programs and stuff, it always has a ton of lines that scroll and say:
ln: [something]: Operation not permitted.

Is this normal? Or did I do somthing wrong? Will my installation still work properly?

Thanks for the help :)

That's not normal really... but your installation should work, you just might need to reinstall your package.

in Linux there are things called dependencies, which basically exists because of the fact that packages need other packages to run. If the package that failed was a critical package, some other programs might not run :(

Could you tell me the name of the package?

it was almost all of them, the screen would sit there for a while, then it would scroll a list of things that returned Operation not Permitted. It finally finished last night, and it won't boot, so I think im going to reformat it and try again.

ok, if everything failed then that's not good.

If you have a fast connection, I'd think of trying a different distro - Slackware is good, but not very good for new Linux users.

Have you looked at Mandrake? It's very good for newbies, and has very good hardware detection.

Thanks, I'll give it a try if the installation doesn't work again this time :thumb:

well it sort of worked this time, but now it only boots up, lets me log in, and then says some weird random quote and I dont know what to do from there. how do i get into KDE or Gnome?

I don't think Slackware installs KDE/Gnome by default...

Try switching through all your virtual terminals by pressing Ctrl+Alt and then F1-F7

If it's installed, but it's not running then after you've booted up and logged in, type this:

[root@localhost]# startx

that should start xwindows in virtual terminal 7(press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get to it)

worked like a charm, and yes, kde and gnome were installed, i had already chosen in the config to have kde be the default, and when i typed startx it started right up :) thank you so much :D:D:D

I use Mandrake, and it works pretty well for me. =)

does that make me the Linux guy here? cool :P

Niann- I use Mandrake as well... it's got further with detecting my rig than most other distros.

I can almost surf the net now :)

bah, you lucky... I mean, I'm good with installation issues and crap, but setting up a wireless network is beyond me, so I can't get on the net using Linux :*( .

I'm stuck using windoze for a while :(
