View Full Version : so another storm comes in

Yesterday was nice, but I knew another storm was coming in, but I forgot to close the windows...

So, at 7:00 this morning (hangover and all) I awake to the sound of rain coming into my apt (I'm on the top floor, so I get the rain first)...

In raising the last window, I simply put my hand straight thru the glass. As I look my hand over to see if I'm cut (which amazingly enough, I'm not at all), listening to the glass fall to the courtyard 75 feet below...

I then spent the next half hour taping a plastic bag over the pane of glass...

Now I just hear the wind whistle around the bag, and the rain hitting the plastic...

I'm just waiting for a little later, so I can turn up my Stereo to drown it out...

Happy New Years Everybody...

oh dang that sucks! As if the windows being up wasnt bad enough... you had to go and knock out the glass with your hand :!: LUCKILY you weren't cut, so thats SOMETHING to look up to. :)

it broke so easily...

I barely touched it... I wonder if it were ready to break anyway... It may have been original, which means its over 75 years old...

anyway, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it when the Manager comes in on Monday, and finds broken glass on her office doorstep (it is directly below the window on the first floor)...

:D

It seems to me that old glass is more likely to break than new glass. I don't know if its thinner? Or that maybe windows today have certain safety measures they need to meet so that they don't break as easily? But thats definitely an impression I have. That might be a reasoning for it not cutting you as well; if its more brittle it might be more likely to break further instead of breaking you.

Well, definitely the old putty helped quite a bit I'm sure. This is a south facing window, so the sun bakes it all day long.

I was so surprised. It just snapped, then 2/3 of the pane was heading for the 1st floor in a hurry (good thing I don't face the busy street), and my hand was getting wet.

Of course taping up the hole was like trying to pull in a parachute in gale force winds, and then using Seran Wrap to stick it to the wet window frame...

all this in my PJ's... I imagine it was quite comical, actually.

Not a real charming way to start the new year, is it? :-\

As long as no one was hurt, right? =)

my g/f got a good laugh out of it, then went straight back to bed...

:D

thor: Yup... at least the glass fell outside, and no one got hurt... that, and my apt is still fairly dry. If I hadn't woke up, I may be paddling my canoe looking for a "Port in the storm."

Yeah, if the water managed to get in, that'd be bad news for the folks under you. :!:

How about :

I'm not real tall, but the window is...

:D

I think the window is about 8' from the floor @ the top... then the ceiling is another 2 1/2 feet above that.

yup, built out of stone in 1927... I think my ceiling is a bit taller since I'm on the top floor (I know I have more room than the others... almost 700 sq ft in a studio). It's unusual, even for this neighborhood which was all built during the boom of the 20's, right before the depression hit.
