apart from the using 'heh' every 3 lines to indicate he made a joke (which he rarely does), this is very useful (even when working with vectors rather than pixels).

Those tutorials have been around for a looooong time, I remember reading the first of them back in high school... :) They're still cool, though.

Anyone have suggestions on books for beginners that want to make a game in Flash? (specifically a side scrolling platformer type game) I saw one called "Flash MX ActionScript for Fun and Games" but wasn't sure if its any good for a beginner. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0789727994/ref=pd_sim_books_5/102-1936654-8212148?v=glance&s=books I heard that Flash MX Game Design Demystified is too advanced for beginners. I barely have any AS experience but learn quick.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

Just a note:

If you're studying at secondary/tertiary level, why not ask your teachers?
I've found most have been really supportive and can come up with great resources, sometimes out of their personal stock, others have even bought the school books at my suggestion!

School's often have budgets for computer books, so why not suggest some?

This is an old site about windows-based games but couple of very useful pages (esp' 2D Math, 3D Math, and Matrices) to help 'refresh' your maths from school (if like me you spent the time staring out the window instead, because you never thought you'd need to use it ... LOL, let alone for anything fun like games!)

This is a great tutorial (from the first post) that gets you started moving things around the screen + keyboard press and mouse tracking.

I wrote a large tutorial on fundamental issues in Flash development, when developing flash games.

It discusses:
1. Document setup
2. Watching the mouse position
3. Watching the keyboard
4. Animating movie clips with actionscript
5. Collision dectection
6. Duplicating movie clips
7. Attaching movie clips
8. Removing movie clips
9. Outputting text to a dynamic text box
10. Playing sound via actionscript

If this is any help, then you can check it out here: http://www.mindsofintelligence.com/forums/showthread.php?t=415 (Added)

There's also more tutorials there too on design, flash, css etc.

My RPG Programming Tutorial was just added to Kirupa's front page. It's not 100% completed yet, but I'm writing it in installments, so you can at least read what's up there now. So far, 7 pages are completed and available to read.

another book, but this is free :stunned: (PDF)
Designing Arcade Computer Game Graphics (http://gamemaker.nl/feldman.html)

In 2000, Ari Feldman wrote a book called Designing Arcade Computer Game Graphics. Unfortunately, it was taken out of print (although copies still exist in the retail channel). Ari Feldman has been so kind to give me the right to distribute the book electronically. In this way all of you can learn about how to create graphics for your games.

Hi Guys,

I've been working on http://4mations.tv which is just preparing for public launch within the next week. We're offering cash rewards for the most popular games... so if you've got any stashed away, be sure to get them uploaded.

Hope to see you on the site,

Hey Guys.. One of the absolute BEST platformer tutorials ever was written (is still being written) by Emanuele Feronato.

Sadly his website isn't really organized in the best of ways... and it was written step by step over multiple pages (which are annoying to find)

The good news however is that:
1. He wrote it for both AS2 and AS3
2. I went through the trouble of tracking down all the pages.

The main AS2 and AS3 pages just feature some rules to use and the source code.

He goes over the theory behind how the programming works on seperate pages.

Enjoy! :hr:

AS2 Pages
Part 1 (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/09/14/new-tile-based-platform-engine-part-1/)
Part 2 (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/09/17/new-tile-based-platform-engine-part-2/)
Part 3 (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/09/18/new-tile-based-platform-engine-part-3/)
Part 4 (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/09/19/new-tile-based-platform-engine-part-4/)
Part 5 (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/09/21/new-tile-based-platform-engine-part-5-clouds/)
Part 6 (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/09/23/new-tile-based-platform-engine-part-6-ladders/)
Part 7 (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/09/30/new-tile-based-platform-engine-part-7-trampolines/)
Part 8 (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/10/01/new-tile-based-platform-engine-part-8-patrols/)
Part 9 (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/10/07/new-tile-based-platform-engine-part-9-coins-n-spikes/)
Part 10 (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/10/13/new-tile-based-platform-engine-part-10-optimization-doors-n-keys/)
Part 11(a) (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/10/19/new-tile-banew-tile-based-platform-engine-part-11-slopes-part-ased-platform-engine-part-11-slopes/)
Part 11(b) (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/10/24/new-tile-based-platform-engine-part-11-slopes-part-b/)

Sadly this is where he left on with the AS2 programming, but from what you have learned about collision detection and a little searching on the interwebz it shouldn't be too hard to build the rest of the engine from here in AS2.

AS3 Pages
Translation of AS2 Part 1 - 6 Into AS3 (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/09/25/new-tile-based-platform-engine-as3-version/)
Translation of AS2 Part 7 - 10 Into AS3 (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/10/14/new-tile-based-platform-engine-as3-version-updated-to-step-10-plus-scrolling/)

Sadly this is where he leaves off.. and as far as I can tell he is not longer working on continuing this tutorial.

Theory Behind the Game Engine
how it all works
Page 1 (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/09/20/new-tile-based-platform-engine-theory-behind-the-player/)
Page 2 (http://www.emanueleferonato.com/2008/10/06/new-tile-based-platform-engine-more-theory/)

Even though it's unfinished It does teach you enough things about how to program platformers that you should be able to finish it on your own.

I will attempt to continue from where he left off... no promises though on whether or not i turn it into a tutorial or just post the source.
