OK, so i ordered a laptop b4 the holidays and it was suuposed to overnight ship to idaho right after they finished building it. well, the next day, i called them and changed the address to new jersey since i cancelled my vacation to idaho. they assured me the addy was changed. they even called me yesterday to confirm the shipment, and said that they were sending it to the NJ addy and that it woudl be here today.
well. i get notice that it was delivered to idaho. IDAHO. so.. now i dont have the computer. FURTHERMORE, it's my boyfriend's family's house that it was shipped to. well, everyone in the house is away on a ski trip so no one is there to ship me the laptop.
i'm on the phone with dell right now... lets see what they do about it.
i love being screwed, i really do...
more news to come soon.

The dell kid got fired because he got busted buying weed...

he was about to sign a $500,000 contract just to agree to do another 8 commercials, which he would have gotten paid for each, plus residuals...

now they won't even run the old "Dude, you're getting a Dell" ad again... ever...

No no you see dell is very very smart, they get people to buy their stuff, takes a genius to sell whacked computers to the intelligent computer buying public...no wait, my grandma bought a dell. Nevermind scratch that, I'll help you kill them if you want. I've got the sticks and rocks ready to go, just give me a time.

Lol, unfortunately I own a Dell too. They're so pathetic, most of their customer support lines are in India or some cheap foreign country, when you call them, their English is so heavyly accented, it's hard to understand what the hell is going on and you're embarrased to ask them to repeat what they just said every five words.

Bastards, but anyways, now we're being brainwashed by the 'Dell Interns'.

Idiots.

I hated dealing with Dell. I had a small video driver problem before and when I called them up, they made me do 30 things that made the problem WORSE. It wasn't until I said to hell with it, hung up the phone, and fixed the thing myself that anything got solved.

The computers aren't that bad. It's cheap, can't ask for much more from them. They're just a pain in the balls to try and deal with - ESPECIALLY with tech support

Maxtr0sity

Correction, their computers aren't cheap. They overprice them, if you build one from scratch yourself, you can definitely get a better deal, with the same amount of headache.

Dell's computers require upgrades, and after you upgrade them to standard it costs tons of money. They make some weird start-off price, ad then after you upgrade you loose all your money.

Dell is a great company.

The Idaho situation seems like a logistics thing. The address could have been changed, but if the shipping database wasn't updated...I mean sounds like fault falls on both ends.

We use them at work, use them at home- they have always been great in all aspects.

And they even respond nicely when you tell them that you work in the field and have already tried that idea...

Parts are shipped overnight.

Great service.

The only thing I will grant is that you don't want to buy the slim tower models because of cooling/air flow issues.

Other than that... they get an A+.

I couldn't get my laptop, with the specs I have, for anything less than I got from Dell ... sure I upgraded - later on from Crucial, my memory - and it cost me a bit more, but I searched for a LONG time for the price I got from Dell, and got lucky with the DVD and memory upgrade.

I agree, making your own desktop from scratch is the way to go, but I'd like to see you build your own laptop from nothing :)

I don't own a Dell, but I know people who do, and my high school used them for all their computer courses (except animation, where they used iMacs), so from experience using them, and from friends having them, I hear Dell is a pretty good company over all.

But of course theres always those situations (like this Idaho one) that just HAVE to happen to you. I would be mighty urked by this situation as well if I were you Gina, but don't let one error turn your head against a company ;) (not saying you are/do, just saying in general). If you get your laptop and it sucks, then go to the Dell HQ and rampage them, bashing each of their heads in with your laptop (fun stuff).

thoriphes
December 30th, 2003, 05:38 PM
That's the good and bad thing about Dell: they ship out really fast, usually the same day if they can make it, but also if you make any drastic changes (such as Gina's situation), you're SOL.

Me, I love Dell. 24-7 customer service, super fast shipping on most of their items, great machines.

I currently have 2 Dells.

One Laptop for my HLP, and a desktop for moi... Both are flawless... then again, I have formatted and installed W2k, so all of Dell's 'apps' are gone...

But I have no problem suggesting Dell to clients whom are in the market, and don't have a lot of knowledge on their side...

i agree with you badmagick, for laptops i was between toshiba and dell, but i chose dell since they were the absolute best deal for what i needed (i got an uber gaming/high end graphics machine for work/play). if i was to go uber UBER, i would have gone with the orgasmic toshiba models, but my wallet didn't permit that this time around. anywhoo.. i have bought like 4 computers from dell in the last 3 years and i am perfectly happy with thier stuff, but as for me, i agree with the people who said to build your own for desktops, that is by far the cheapest and BEST way to go IMO. you get more for your money, and you don't get all the crap that you don't want either. lucky for my my boyfriend is a certified hardware genious, so he can advise me in all that stuff since hardware just isn't my thing (yet).

also, matr0sity, i TOTALLY agree about the tech support people.... here's my thing..

PEOPLE WHO DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH SHOULDN'T DO TECH SUPPORT OVER THE PHONE THAT REQUIRES THEM TO SPEAK IN ENGLISH.

i swear, i JUST got off the phone. this lady.... look, she was nice, i'm not trying to knock her. and you could tell she was embarrassed about her lack of ability to communicate with me. not only that but she didn't know squat, so i know she was feelin blue, so i was nice to her. but REALLY...

not only did she hardly speak english, she didn't understand half of what i said. i had to talk slow and use simple words and be totally explicit and say stuff over like 8 times b4 she understood me. (for example, i had to explain the situation at least 14 times). and ask sam, or anyone on here who has talked to me or knows me, i talk VERY clearly esPECIALLY when on a business call. so it's NOT me.

anyway, here's whats going on now. after talkign with her for an hour at least, she makes me explain 14 times the situation, puts me on hold for another cumulative hour, and has me confirm the addresses like 18 times. THEN she tells me that they can't ship it to my house. i ask why not. she says she doesn't know, but they aren't allowed to ship to my house. then i tell her WHY NOT, and i have never had any problems b4, and they have delivered 3 computers here b4, two within the last 6 months, so there should be no problem. after holding for a bit more, she comes back and tells me that my address doesnt exist. then i tell her that it DOES exist, since, in fact, i LIVE here, and am talking to her, at that very moment FROM that address. at this point she gets on the phone with a superior. we go back and forth and finally Dell establishes that yes, i do in fact live at a real live existing address, and they can ship to me. it goes on an on, but i'll make the next part simple. my boyfriend is in the mountains with his family on a ski trip, so there is no one at the house. fed ex cant pick up the package without having some1 there. so i need to call my bf and ask him to call his neighbor and see if they can be there to give fedex the package at a specific time. WELL, the lady doesnt understand the concept. i have to explain 5 times. there is no one at the house, and i can't get a confirmation of when some1 can be there until tonight after they are already closed, so i tell her i can call back tomorrow to set up the time. she puts me on hold. she comes back and has fedex on the line and tells me to schedual a pickup time. i tell her again, twice that i can't do that at this point. fedex hangs up, and i figure, im outta here. at this point, i notice my newley hooked up internet connection (newly, like, today, just got the sattellite/router working liek 3 hours ago) all of a sudden stops working. so i tell her i must go. i get off the phone. then i call directWay, my isp. im on the phone with them. thankfully this man was competant and we smoothed out the problem.

add this whole thing to about 2 hours earlier on the phone with directway trying to troubleshoot the FIRST time around, and i am about ready to cry. then my parents come home and my mom starts getting an attitude with me and yelling, because i am so stressed, and about ready to break stuff, and she tries to talk to me and i CALMLY tell her to please leave me alone at the moment, i am about ready to burst inside and i need to be alone. so of course she yells at me. then i called up my friend to see if he wanted to go to a bar and get trashed after work and he starts giving me shat saying 'i told you so'. so i ask him what the heck he's talkign about and he says 'all this woulda been avoided if you just moved in with me instead of your parents last week'. i go on to reiterate the reasons i gave himt he FIRST time around, and he's beign a pain in the arse, so i hang up and now i have no stress releif except for this kirupa rant. so if you have read thus far, THANK YOU for letting me rant so much. it's much needed.

anyone in NJ wanna go get a beer? or 24 beers? hehe

i said it once ill keep saying it to the day i die namebrand pcs suck, no matter what os they run, they limit your upgradeablity and you will run into hardware compatibility problems most of the times, i purchased a 17"laptop a few weeks ago tis a HP i was going to purchase the toshiba but they ran out :-\ so i ended up with the HP i ahve no complaints so far, first thing i did was format it and customize it to my liking :beam:

As for building your own laptop you can do it check it out here

I also have a 2nd (very minimal w/o internet yet) W2k on my 2nd HD, just in case I screw something up, I can still get to my work files, and not spend any time on getting back up...

I also do incrimental backups every nite to another HD, in another machine...

I've been using Dell's for the past 7 years, and they rock. Their tech support was better before they outsourced it (they temp. closed their offshore places I think), but their forums are great for quick fixes.

EDIT: I too format my comp immediately after I receive it. I don't prefer the outdated drivers and unnecessary applications that come bundled with it.

My school uses MDG's - and they all suck like a toothless three-year-old. Sadly, the school board signed a deal with them to get "lower prices" but what actually happens is MDG jacks up the prices and then sells us loads of crap. $1,300 approx computers that could (and most likely were) made from parts straight out of the garbage. Not only that, but then the school goes and screws them over with their "student OS" or whatever the hell they want to call it (program is called usernet, and it works over top of windows) which installs filters that escentially drop the usability of the computer to zero. (the I.T. guy from my old school admits that it's the dumbest thing the schools could have done to the computers)

Well, I thought that MDG was just taking advantage of their monopoly over the school - but as it turns out, when my dad went to get a quote on a new computer (because his is something like 6 years old and he is finally admitting that he needs to upgrade it - it's a pentium 2, 233mhz: painful) they did the samething to him and gave him an excruciatingly high price for a computer only marginably better than what he had.

I have a micron pc, and ive had no problems with it at all...

But i think the key to getting a good computer from Dell, Gateway, Micron and others like them, is to customize your machine and upgrade it before purchasing it.. If you "go for the deal" and get the advertised "On Sale" Base Model, you usually end up getting obsolete components, and the least bottom of the barrel bargains as bonus gifts...

dell seems to be a pretty good company from what i hear...plus dells always seem so darn quiet...they must have a really good ventilation system that lets them only use one or two system fans. me, i have the case, processor, and power supply fan plus six smaller fans on my hdd's :) i'll trade a little extra noise for a few more years of computer life.

Dell is great... But they use Maxtor hard Drives.. Which pretty much blow and have a 50% fail ratio...

Other than that.. They are pretty good machines..

I agree with tech support... But Red.. The next time.. STARt yelling from the begining, then... after a little bit.. Calm down.. apologize.. then ask them to do it again.. Something about the ladies in india, that when you yell at them first, then calm down.. they listen to you and do everything you want them to :)

Maxtor hard Drives are really bad. Come to think about it, I had my computer come brand new to my door step with a faulty Maxtor HD. We sent it back and got it fixed. The next month, it blew again. We had to send it back for a second time!!!

This caused alot of aggravation and having to do essays by hand. :(

my dell is cool, dvd drive getting very noisy lately with burned cds (1 year old comp); thing that bothers me is they put PC 800 RDRAM in there, which is f**king expensive and almost nowhere to be found; last time i asked, the guy in the comp shop told me it's outdated... seems a bit stupid...
but i like the inner layout, very clean and easy to change cards or HD, almost plug'n'play ; support has been ok so far (altho' even here in France, when you call the hotline, you don't get native speakers, i heard from a guy they outsourced their call-center to morroco/ africa coz it's cheaper...well..)
I just reinstalled winxp, but without rebooting, thought i'd get the option to format my C drive but no, so installed anyway, got a nice new-looking windoze, but all the stuff in Program Files was still there, no more user switching possible etc, so i'll see you all in a few days after a full format & 2nd re-install :(

courage, golgi...they'll find your adress sooner or later ;)
see you all in 2k4 then.. HAPPY NEW YEAR (we'll get it 6 hours before :) )

The insides of the Dell GX260 are a work of art.

I keep hearing this about maxtor, but I've never had a problem with them.

If money isn't an option its Seagate or Western Digital for me.

*and for the record I would rather build my own machine; that's what I've always done - but if I had to choose a pre-manufactured setup, it would be from Dell or HP.

Big corporations huh heres a story

In March, 1999 a man living in Kandos (near Mudgee in New South Wales) received a bill for his as yet unused gas line stating that he owed $0.00.
He ignored it and threw it away. In April he received another bill and threw that one away too. The following month the gas company sent him a very nasty note stating they were going to cancel his gas line if he didn't send them $0.00 by return mail.

He called them, talked to them, they said it was a computer error and they would take care of it. The following month he decided that it was about time that he tried out the troublesome gas line figuring that if there was usage on the account it would put an end to this ridiculous predicament. However, when he went to use the gas, it had been cut off.

He called the gas company who apologised for the computer error once again and said that they would take care of it. The next day he got a bill for $0.00 stating that payment was now overdue. Assuming that having spoken to them the previous day the latest bill was yet another mistake and he ignored it, trusting that the company would be as good as their word and sort the problem out.

The next month he got a bill for $0.00 stating that he had 10 days to pay his account or the company would have to take steps to recover the debt.

Finally, giving in, he thought he would beat the company at their own game and mailed them a cheque for $0.00. The computer duly processed his account and returned a statement to the effect that he now owed the gas company nothing at all.

A week later, the manager of the Mudgee branch of the Westpac Banking Corporation called our hapless friend and asked him what he was doing writing cheque for $0.00. After a lengthy explanation the bank manager replied that the $0.00 cheque had caused their cheque processing software to fail.

The bank could therefore not process ANY cheques they had received from ANY of their customers that day because the cheque for $0.00 had caused the computer to crash.

The following month the man received a letter from the gas company claiming that his cheque has bounced and that he now owed them $0.00 and unless he sent a cheque by return mail they would be taking steps to recover the debt. The man then tried to file a debt harassment claim against the gas company. It took him nearly 2 hours to convince the clerks that he was not joking but convince them he did.

They subsequently provided statements which were considered substantive evidence of the aggravation and difficulties the man had been forced to endure during this debacle.

The matter was heard in the Magistrate's Court in Mudgee and the outcome was this:

The gas company was ordered to:

1. Immediately rectify their computerised accounts system or show cause, within 10 days, why the matter should not be referred to a higher court for consideration under Company Law.

2. Pay the bank dishonour fees incurred by the man.

3. Pay the bank dishonour fees incurred by all the Westpac clients whose cheques had been bounced on the day our friend's had been.

4. Pay the claimant's court costs; and

5. Pay the claimant a total of $1,500 per month for the 5 month period March to July inclusive as compensation for the aggravation they had caused their client to suffer.

ok guys. here's an update on my Dell Hell.

they were supposed to pick up the puter from idaho and overnight it to me in NJ. simple. It took me 4 hours on the phone with someone to actually establish this, but whatever. they set it up for pickup today. the thing never got picked up today. i call the carrier, they tell me that dell messed up. oh, btw, it took me an hour to get through to the carrier because i had to call dell TWICE to get the right number out of them. now i am furious. they are costing me money, time, and aggravation. i call back again, bet Victoria from India. Victoria is my hero.
she listened to me explain the problem. then she listened to me tell her my whole sob story, complete with aggravation, mishaps, dell screwing up, money lost, blah blah. i tell her i'm not mad at her, i know it's not her fault, but overall i have had a TERRIBLE experience, and i'm halfway between tellign them to shove the computer and im goign elsewhere.
victoria listens and victoria consoles. then we call the airborn and fix the problem. then she asks me is there anythign else she can do and i tell her that i want some money back for my inconvenience. she says ok, and apologizes profusely and says they will sredit me money for my inconvenience.
I WON. the only thing is the system went down and i have to call back later. hehehehhe. poetic, isnt it?
anyway, now im wondering how much money to ask for, any ideas???

why do you people deal with Computer making companies? its' so much cheaper and easier to build it yourself. it's just that all you people are iether to busy or to lazy to build. the only exception to that is laptops. which i whould only trust sony.
i mean look in the ads especially u red. if you check in the union city, West new york area they usually have Computer Show & sales periodically. some nice stuff can be bought there.

warranties, customer service (bad or not), reliability (mostly), time (not everyone has TIME to build their own), a sexy girl in the ads.

they come with warrenties, just that it comes seperatly betwen each product. like the Nvidea Titanium comes with a warrenty and the Prentium 4 come with a warrenty. i can go fo an erternity. secondly it only take me a half hour to build mine but that's becuse i do that for kinda a part time job during the summer down in Stevens tech :-P

holy crapmonkey, way to make a friggin generalization.
:P

like norie said there are reasons for buying from companies, personally, i agree with you that hommade computers are always better. the individual parts carry warranties, and in a stock puter, if you make any mods, the warranties are usually voided. so that kills norie's warranty thing. but a lot of people don't have the knowhow, either.

personally, i'm never buying a desktop from a company again. in fact i'm in the middle of building my own now. but this is a laptop, and i think toshiba is better then sony.
i would have gotten toshiba if i could afford it, but for the amount of custom stuff i added, dell turned out to be the most economical , better then ANY brand, and i'll have it fully warrantied till i get another one, so i'm perfectly happy with it.

yes, but you have to deal with each one individually. And use your warranty with out of area companies (Intel) may take weeks to get anything back. But the company you buy it from, which usually has a local store, you can get back a lot sooner. Also, not everyone trusts themselves to install hundreds of dollars worth of parts that can be fried in a matter of seconds, with some static electricity. ;) and if the company messes up your part... they have to deal with it.

lol.. norie.. how often does like, the whole puter go bad? i'd rather deal with individual companies. they certainly have better support. and dell doesnt have stores....

u got a point there norie. i remember my friend wasted duel processors cause the mother board backfired and blew up. made a pretty big fire cause a couple circuits were cut

i like making my own comps not only because of the quality assurance that you get but also you can put neons, and Water cooling systems in your computer. I hardly doubt that Sony or Dell ar EVER gonna think of putting Water cooling sytems in their's and forget even talking about neons
