Since it's been annoying me a lot for a while now, I've decided to compile a list of annoying spelling and grammar errors, etc. commonly practiced on the net. Then possibly construct a resource to promote the art of typing properly.
So what I want from you is the things that annoy you most about the way people talk on web sites and message boards, IMs etc.
for example: 1337 speak, txt abbreviations, misuse of there/their/they're, stuff like that.
Gentlemen, start your engines.

Every time a sentence ends, you’re supposed to capitalize the first letter of the first word in the next sentence.

Much thanks, problem now fixed.
Remember people, I'm not talking about strictly proper grammar or typos. Just basic misuse of words or unnecessary abbreviations, I'm not advocating sieving through posts to catch small, accidental errors. Although I do realise people will be closely examining mine. ;)

There sure are a lot of accidental mistakes here... ;)
I realize that I am sifting through looking for things, but the point is, grammer will always be abused on the net. There really isn't any reason not to "speak" the way you want to speak. When people are talking to you, they don't always speak in proper English. Casual conversation is full of slang and screwed up grammer. I find it more irritating when people but in and say, "Jane and I", Than if someone had said, "Jane and me", and just continued with the story.

Realise is spelled this way in the UK. ;)
As I said though, I'm not talking about strict grammar and sentence construction. I am simply talking about basic misuse of words and condensed words which are often not worth using. Although there are several mistakes in your post also, they aren't really what I'm referring to.

Sorry to all the Canadians and Englishmen but I hate when, sitting here in America, I have to read your different spellings in English language. Colour, Realise. Call me what you will, but it just annoys the hell out of me because I was taught a different way. Can't we just come to terms with one way to spell them and then let that be that?

What about Scotsmen, don't we annoy you too? Why should the English get all the glory?

That's like saying "can't there just be one language for the entire world to speak"
It just isn't happening ;)
I don't mind it so much (actually I like colour better even though I was taught color), it's not like the difference is so drastic that you don't know what the word is.

Color is another way... Why add an extra letter to a word that doesn't need it? Albeit, I like saying colour... I just would rather spell out color... Why do you think they put it like that in HTML and everything.. One less letter :D
mum? Mums are flowers.. Mom's are Mother's... That's why it is spelled "mom". Why have one word mean two different things when you can have one word for each.. :)

I'm just amazed how many people already forgot their first grade grammar. There is a big difference between "your" and "you're" and "its" and "it's"
and were and where

btw = By The Way
ppl = People ;)
I hate it when people put brackets around their names.
And just to elaborate:
your = possesive
you're = conjunction for "you are"
it's = conjunction for "it is"
its = possesive
we're = conjunction "we are"
were = adverb
where = referring to position.

yeah, these kind of mistakes are what I mean. Don't forget there/their/they're and wear/where, which is a less common one, but originally started this for me. These kind of things could be easily avoided with a tiny bit of thought, but as a result of carlessness/laziness/ignorance of anything wrong, they happen ALL the time. There are a large amount of youngsters on the internet who will grow up with this misuse of words, and they will do it themselves without realising that they are just wrong.:smirk: It's a shame.
PS. you must love name, very much. Awww

my personal gripe with the way people talk on the web is the use or rather lack of use of the word too
e.g. yeah I hate that to
instead of
yeah I hate that too
sooooooooooooooooo many people I see use to instead of too, I hardly ever see the word used properly, something like 98% of the time its incorrect.
For anyone who doesn't know:
if you can replace the word 'to' in a sentance with the word 'also' then you should be using too not to
:P

yeah, its a good point legoman, is the sloppy standard of language used on the net having a (significantly) bad influence on the generation of young-uns growing up with it?

Conform to our way of spelling then... and I call you a fizzle. Cookie is a type of biscuit, *** means cigarette, jelly is not put in sandwiches, chips are hot and savoury and sulpher does not have an f in it. If you don't like our language, I won't like yours.

you say you spell badly online but you're good at english? what does that mean? that you're purposly misspelling things when you're online?
the english I was taught at school was more about literature and drama analysis than it was spelling and the language itself. therefore it wasn't necessary to have good spelling to be good at the subject, also if you're word processing an essay then you can do all the spelling and grammar checks you like. I'm not having a go or anything, I'm just trying to clarify on what you've said.
I'm sure the poor english seen on the internet effects some people's lingual ability to a degree, I'm just pondering on how much of an influence it has.
I mean if you're a Brit and you're constantly reading american spellings of words (not saying you're spelling is incorrect I'm just using it as an example), or just poorly written english you'll be taking a lot of it in subconsiously and if you don't know how to spell a word in the first place, if you read it on the net spelled incorrectly then surely thats the version of the word your mind is going to pick up on?

The abbreviations part I can cope with, as long as they don't get too out of hand.
I don't proofread alot of my posts. I don't have the time to go back and grammatically critique my own post and I don't think anyone should have to either. Internet language is really an extension of your own language. I would like to see if alot of you actually spoke correctly when you are tlaking to one of your friends on the street. Probably not.. I know I don't and shouldn't have to.
So.. If we are among friends here... What's a little *lol* and a little *lmao* going to hurt anyone... Really?
The only case where I find the language to be utterly moronic is this "1337" speach going around. Other than that... Let bygones be bygones and let the schools teach kids how to talk, not us. Isn't that their job in the first place?

There are variations of acceptable language on the internet. For example, you may not speak the same way in an e-mail as you do in an instant message (IM). IM's tend to be more fast paced conversations, thus making abbrivations more acceptable--especially when talking to multiple people. Agreeably, most of the formality of common language has been stripped from most computer mediated communications, with exceptions of course. One does not speak in the same manner in an e-mail to a boss as one would to a friend in another city.E-mail has been a great democratizing force in the workplace (Shwartz), one of which has been the greatest technology achievements relating to business ethics.

I do use some abbreviations in messenger, and text messages... but it tends to be long words. Like because, to cos... but using the wrong "to" doesn't save much space (and in texts it tends to be 2... unless my dyslexic friends would get confused...).

Nice topic legoman, heh.. All i'll say is, people who use all these stupid abbreviations and think they're "cool" sound very illiterate. I end up blocking most people who use too much abbreviations on Instant Messengers, it ticks me off, lol.
Yes i do say "lol" often, but that's about that only abbreviation i use really, "Haha" doesn't always quite work :D
