My AP European History teacher offered us extra credit if we went to see Master and Commander this weekend, I went, and it was far worse than it's ratings would lead you to believe (it got 5 stars). Anyway, it hardly has a plot except for an English ship vs. a French ship. They fight 3 times, each battle lasts for 20 minutes, and then they heal their wounded and have funerals, it was kind of interesting after the first battle, but was just plain boring by the end of the movie. It kind of had the same effect as the Perfect Storm- wave after wave after wave. Apparently it was historically accurate, but I guess real history isn't that entertaining, would have been better if they strayed from the facts a bit to make the overall plot better and make it seem more thought out.

Overall- the good special effects and historical accuracy don't make up for the lack of a plot.

Just to give you an idea, there were people snoring during the second battle scene, 40 minutes into the movie...

I liked the movie, good story of how the seamen lived, how the fought, great attention to detail, the plot while simple is good, there is alot of good movie out there..

My only (and biggest) complain is that the editor, should be thrown in to a sac, the sac thrown in to a river, and the river be tossed in to space.

Whoever edited did a horrible job, you didnt know where it began and where it ended, he could have cut down the whole film by like 30 min.

Yeah, I agree with that, and what was with how at the end they just said that the doctor on the French ship had died a few months back, and then they just didn't really do anything? I was expecting the French to take their ship back over or something lol :P

I mean, it showed sealife pretty good, and was pretty interesting in a historical sense, but not 2 hours worth of interesting...

I would give it a five out of five stars anyday.

I'd give it maybe 3/5 just because of the historical accuracy and the special effects, took off for the lack of plot and repetition

duh. russel crowe - sucks. movies that take place primarily in an open ocean setting - suck. Combine the two, and you are left with 'Master and Commander of the Box Office Bust...'

Thats the cool part! Open sea, if jaws would be in it it would rock! :D

Anyway, lik I said earlier, I hated the editor, other than that it was ok.

My freind she didnt like it cuz, well it wasnt a chick flick...

Anyway, if you take your Girl to see this movie, just tell her to pretend that the doctor is a chick, and well.. its quite beleiveble.!

I just got back from seeing M&C, and I really liked the movie! :) It was really nice and painted a nice picture about the lives the navy personnel had back in the day!

mlk - the brits (disguised as french) won....on a technicality :)

It is so nice to see that John Nash can not only do math but captain a ship and play a musical instrument.

Cheers!
