Has anyone actually ever changed their screen resolution to view a site that has a "Best Viewed At # x # resolution" indicator on the front page?

lol! Never!
I just go and see if it looks too ugly with a different resolution, if it does then I leave but I never change it!

No, never. I always surf at a screen resolution of 1152x864 and with the browser maximised.
Trying to get someone to resize their window, or even better - change resolution - isn't going to work.

But if it works best at 1024 x 768 then you not looking at it at the best resolution.
Why oh why do ppl put a looks best at message on their sites.

Welcome to the forums!
:: i assume that people that write that on their sites are trying to sound proffessional and say, dont try anything less than 1024 X 768 resolution. The site might have content that you may have to scoll if the resolution is less than 1024 X 768.
:: me i test all my sites on my laptop in different resolution as to see what others would see.

I think it's because when a user comes with a resolution of 640x480 and the site looks crap then he/she knows it's not a bug or anything...

Whats current standards. 17" monitors appear to be pretty common nowadays so 1024 x 768. What about machine speeds, op systems / Browser versions etc
