I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Way_Things_Work) love the encyclopedia. Bought it for ~ 1$ (one dollar, special offer in Polland) and it is worth so much more... I wish there were more sources of engineering wisdom, so easy to understand.
Do You perhaps know a forum or a site that will suffice? Best with images, not necessarily for kids, but not something like a 600 pages book "Basics of Mechanics of Solids" :D.
And BTW, to also input something, here are books that I found too hard to understand:
