Ok, I know what they mean, and what they do - for the most part. I have done my homework as far as how to use them and such and even worked with them in Dreamweaver a bit.
My question is - what do you use them for? I mean are these style sheets really only for huge websites where there are pages and pages of info that you need formated quickly or do you think it's worth it to use them for small sites, like 5- 10 pages worth.
The reason I ask is, I havent really ever used them before and would like to start. I do all my work the old fashioned hard way and I just wondered if this will be that much faster for smaller scale sites as well as large ones. What do you think? What do you use them for? Are they a Neccessity in web design?

you absolutely NEED css. CSS, I swear, is amongst the most amazing web technologies around today.
Dreamweaver is an excellent way to learn CSS. Just play around with the styles panel, and look at what it creates.
It's not only for formatting either. It can be used for other things, like positioning elements and making your site cross-browser compatible easier.
If you want to see an example, take a look at www.csszengarden.com, and click view source. There is no presentational markup like FONT or even tables in the source.

Well from personal experience, they do save a lot of time and they keep all the pages looking consistent.

njs12345 - thanks.
I couldnt check out that site, the link didnt work. But I know what you mean. I have just purchased Studio MX 2004 and thought I would give it a go. I think these things are amazing and even by just playing around with it a bit, it's very cool - but I am guessing there is more of a learning curve than I have experienced so far. I am still looking into it.
Anyone else?

It's a pity that link doesn't work, because that is the perfect example of what CSS can do. EDIT: There is obviously a bug in vBulletin : it's including the , in the link. Remove the comma, and it should work :)
CSS has a fairly short learning curve - I'd say it's slightly harder than HTML, but once you get the basics down, it's just a case of learning the right properties.

It also lets you change your sites theme (fonts, colours, etc..) by editing a mere single document.. www.echoecho.com has a good intro to CSS :)

CSS saves you time and effort...
Actually, most programmers use it more often than designers.. Only for the mere fact that it helps us position backgrounds and images correctly on a page, down to any type of screen position.
There are just TOO many useful features to talk about in this rinky dink 10,000 character document that I'll just say.. USE IT! hehe..
