the human race will die out before AI gets that smart!

Doesn't AII mean Artifical Intelligence Intelligence not Artificial Artificial Intelligence! ;)

There are actually some cool AI robots that can do basic things that are being improved upon at the place I am studying. Here is a cool article about it: http://www.technologyreview.com/articles/qa0402.asp :)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
Who's that one guy who voted 'yes'?
Guess he got a bit too inspired by syko's footer...

Hehe I voted YES - you may want to post in Ordered for a discussion of it. I make it a point never to spend more than 2 minutes on a post in Random...I'd never get any work done in real life if it was any other way :alien:

NO !!! :(
Humens cant make robots better/smarter than humens. Nothing create better things than God :)

(I was looking for the option "Only with green eggs and ham")
Nah, not likely. We are too smart/stupid to program something that may take over the world.

Computers can only become intelligent to a certain point. They can do extremely complex things, but they don't have the reasoning ability of humans to do simple things. For example, if you give a computer a random math function to calculate, there are times when you can have a computer calculate a number for years while a human can immediately tell you that a solution is infinite.
Computers are good for repetitive tasks, and that's why many of Japan's manufacturing industries have a lot more robots than people in some areas. But with that said, there is potential to give computers the reasoning and learning ability of the laziest of humans :)

roflmao... u guys are just insane =)
well, what k said, that may be true... but there are already systems in development with organic-materia... this one frightens me a bit :x
if sometimes the cpu of the robot will become nearly so complex like the human brain -> good night... :(

AI wont take over Nature will, we'll all get wiped out by some tiny single celled bug or disease or something equally unimpressive, would be nice to think robots with whacking great guns will finish us though

I wouldn't worry too much. A robotologist (is that what you call them?) has been quoted as saying (early 2003) "Todays robots have the collective inteligence of a c0ckroach. A retarted c0ckroach. A retarded, lobotomized c0ckroach. A retarted, lobotomized c0ckroach filled with LSDs. They won't be taking over for us anytime soon."

For robots to take over the world, they would need a reliable power source, so that won't happen any time soon. I'm going to make a wild guess that within the next 10 years, a few robots will be created in some lab that has the potential to do basic things and even learn from observation.
The problem with robots is their inability to analyze simple scenarios, and since we don't quite know exactly how our own minds process/store/analyze data, it'll be difficult to give robots the ability to think without the reliance of a set of functions another human defined.

"For robots to take over the world, they would need a reliable power source"
In the Animatrix, Humans attempted to cut the AI robot's power source (solor energy), by filling the atmosphere with dark clouds/polution. It was at that point that the robots decided to start using human's as 'batterys'. It may not be exactly realistic, but it is a scary thought.
AI is promising, but as with all new technologies, there are right and wrong ways to apply the technology.

AI is an interesting topic :) Yeah - Majeye, or similar to what went on in the Matrix; harvesting humans as batteries!

Yo, K-man! Thats what i meant. The Animatrix folowed to story line of the Matrix, and explained the events that led up to the first movie. If you havn't seen it, you really should, especially if you are a fan of the Matix, or animated movies. There are about 8 shorts, i believe, all of them animated by a various studios. You should check it out.... Peace.
