whether or not you use IE, you still have to 1) concern yourself with these issues when developing for the web and 2) worry about incompatibilities with non-ie browsers as other developers try to handle this.

Not only that, but its just supporting further enforcement of future insane patents.

sigh....that is quite unfortunate :( I hope the implementation of preventing those dialog boxes that Macromedia plans on releasing are good. I don't want to have to visit Flash sites where I am going to have to press OK to view every single Flash animation placed on that site.

EDIT: It'll be so much better if Flash can have the default built-in support that IMG tags have. It would be easier to insert, and there probably wouldn't be many issues with the embed tags.

I wouldn't so much as blame Microsoft as i would blame Eolas or whoever they are. Them sueing of there stupid patent that shouldnt' have been granted in the first place is the casue of this.

kirupa
October 7th, 2003, 11:19 AM
Yeah, Eulas is just out to make some easy money based on a ridiculous patent filing.

Its one guy. His intention is not only to make a crap load of money, but also to help even out the competition in the browser wars by targeting IE's monopoly

does he have a spiffy outfit?

If he didn't, I'm sure he does now with a several hundred million ruling in his favor

Btw sen, have you tried the MSDN Internet Explorer update? I am skeptical about downloading it now and having to suffer through endless dialog boxes...considering the macromedia update hasn't arrived yet. I'm wondering if the update can be easily uninstalled so that I can surf in defiance of the court rules for just a little bit longer :)

Eolas is a company which holds a patent to how embeded material is handled in browsers (or at least filed the suit that concerns it). Recently there has been a lawsuit against MS because of this patent which MS lost - requiring that certain changes be made to IE to conform to the decisions of the ruling - which is what this is all about.

Phat7
October 7th, 2003, 01:08 PM
Wait, wait. This Eolas didn't invent the <embed> tag, did it? I mean how did it get the patent in the first place? :h:

I think 90% of that money was given to the judge who ruled in Eolas' favor, no other explanation for this bull$^*%

Ok, why don't we (the members of kirupa forum) start an angry letter right here to send of to eolas telling them (in essence) to release the charges and go f*ck themselves. OK:

-------------
Dear Eolas,

We, the members of www.kirupaforum.com and others (see attached petition) believe that your actions against microsoft's Internet Explorer Browser are completely unfounded and...

ok, I never was very good at persuasive writing.

Stupid greedy people!! http://www.freddythunder.com/test/hair.gif

Coppertop: I agree, we should; but you know as well as I that whomever would read the letter would be like:
"Hmmm....bunches of money? or....make strangers happy?...nope - screw the strangers!!"

At least the solution is easy, jut a pain in the butt.

Yikes - Eolas, in I am guessing a Godfather II-like fashion, trying to get money from google: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=1212&e=7&u=/nm/20040109/wr_nm/tech_sco_google_dc&sid=95573503 :skull:

so should i start implementing one of the solutions to the flash animations on my site or do I not have to worry about it?

CanadianGuy
January 10th, 2004, 04:24 PM
This is crazy! I barely have a grasp on how to get stuff to work the way I want now. I don't know javascript and that guide that macromedia published is a bunch of jargon to me.

Is this thing as big of a problem as I think it is? That judge is obviously an idiot!

If I get the updated browser version just to see the changes can I unstall it and come back to this version?

January 11th, 2004, 01:45 AM
wasn't there an article on w3 schools about how the patent lawsuit was false and the technology was in fact pre-existant?

that's just unbelievable, users as it is are freaked out and afraid of the internet much less something that prompts them to accept something more...just to view a webpage...most people will probably think its some kind of adult content or something

ughhh

billmar, the new IE developper version doesn't install, just put in a folder and run the exe!
that's how you can run multiple versions of IE on the same comp'
(see thread in News somewhere).
tested.
