Rants

things that bother me:

Dictionary.com self focuses the search input onLoad, so if you're typing before the page loads, when it does focus, it selects your text and with you typing, you end up typing over it
Photoshop files can be like 5 times larger (filesize) than an equivalent Fireworks file
Copying PS slices into another document is so arcane. They couldnt add it into the duplicate option or allow for drag and drop?
Mac window sizing restricted to the lower right corner. One of my big complaints in the Mac interface. Really sucks for app panels and dual monitors at different res's where sizing windows can mean needing to first move it into the higher res monitor just to reach the friggen little lower corner
How IE ftp (win) sometime crashes the explorer shell and how so many other ftp apps dont fully support drag and drop.
Activation
Remixes ;)
How my DVD player doesnt automatically turn off like it should when its set to
How oreos are packaged... makes it hard to keep them fresh for long periods of time; and when they arent fresh, they get soggy
How picky and idiotic clients can be :scream:

Ok, well I have quite a few rants, but right now is only one is overtaking them all....

My water heater busts a leak. It's still under warranty, tech support says return it to Home Depot and get a free water heater... yay. Come to find, the government releases a law that now all water heaters have to have a sensor on them for flammable chemicals (this is a recent law that was passed), so depsite that our warranty says if our current one malfunctions we get a free one, the arsewads at Home Depot only gave us store credit for our original one. So to get the new one with the new nifty special required sensor we have to use our store credit AND pay $80 USD (not including the parts we need to install it). Yes that is right, our warranty required us to pay $80 dollars extra for our water heater.... some warranty eh. After arguing for over an hour with Home Depot we finally got a number from GE (company that makes our water heater) where we can call tomorrow and try and argue for them to pay the difference we had to pay. The NEW warrany paper with our NEW water heater now says that any government mandated changes to the water heater aren't covered under the warranty if we need to return and we will only get the original price of our old water heater, but our OLD warranty says nothing about this, so why should I have to pay $80 USD extra for something my warranty should cover!!!!!!

I even had to install the friggin thing, the warranty only covered that for the first year, after that all labor is on the hands of the owner.

FRIGGAN FRAGGIN ARGH!!!!!!

Thank you sen :hangover:

Oh and I totally hear you on all your rants!

THere are so many things that pissme off. I need to write them down. currently the one that comes to mind is:

when one or two people sit at a booth/table for 4, when there are plenty of 2 person tables! it annoys me even more when that causes me to have to find two 2 person tables because they took the last 4 person seat!

ARGH!!

People with no knowledge of computers who have managed to bluff their way up the corporate ladder to a position of worrying responsibility for.. computers.

Management.

People who have no idea of what my job actually involves and expect a fantastic new design for a website within the hour.

People who don't read the rules in SotW.

Management.

People who trip off on two week long holidays to sunny climes every few months but who won't let me take some of the 14 days of holiday I have left for this year because 'it's not a good time right now and we need you here'.

People who say "We've got this banner advert we need making, has to be about 12K. Oh, and by the way, the concept design is 2MB. Can I collect it in half an hour?"

Management.

Add to mine:

Trying to convince Marketing that 2MB doesn't go into 15K, no matter what way you do the maths.

Seriously. They've come up with this idea for an ad banner that's got a beautiful sky background, and a Churchill dog hanging on a washing line. Those two images alone are 30K! I mean, even trace bitmap can only get them down to 15, and that's terrible quality with no animation yet!

I think I'm going to explode...

Oh I got one I can relate to you erlier rant.

So I make this site, with graphics and all, and my client says there are a few modifications she wishes to make, sure no prob. She shows up and starts complaining that the site is too wide 750 px, and the printer cuts of when it prints (Its a website! Who cares?) But okay, okay, I will make it smaller, so then she tells me "Oh by the way I want to use this panoramic pic, (768 px wide!!!) and make it about 50% bigger!"

WAHHAHAHAHARGHHHt?

Also , rearange all these pictures, add these new ones, make them High-quality and bigger! But, dont make the loading time too long!

Type a 20-line post on the forum in the reply field at the bottom of the thread, then wish to insert an emoticon which I don't know the code for, so hit the post reply button and forget to cut the text I typed, moreover instead of going back to the previous page, accidentally close the browser window... Whiny skinny depressed long haired greasy artistic people

People that insist on talking to you when youve done everything in your power to show them you dont give a floppy shiznit.

Idiots at the gym that take up equipment you want to use that either have no idea how to use it or take 10 mins between sets.

Ska Music

The kind of people that typically protest. Not because they protest because they are usually tree hugging, granola eating, open toed shoe wearing, uninformed jesus freaks from some obscure religious offshoot.

Nascar

Clowns

People at work that leave less than 1/8 of a cop of coffee left in the pot. Even though there is a sign right overhead that says "you kill da joe, you make some mo"

People that take credit for others work.

Dell targets people who do not know much about computers by showing very low priced PC's with low ram (something uneducated computer ppl don't know about) and allowing you to upgrade it, as well as many other things with their :customize: feature, and almost everything is over priced.

They also target people who do not know much about computers because they say:
"It's as easy as Dell!"

You know, I think okay of myself, I am not terribly hot, but I work out regularly, I have a good job, I dress nice, and I treat people well. So I know this girl, I see in school all the time, I sometimes I say hi and whatnot, so anyway, I decide to aproach her and talk to her, maybe get to know her. So anyway, I aproach her and say "Hey whatsup?" She gives me this dirty look and the what 'who the helI are you?' And ignores me, I mean! Thats just plain rude!!! - cell phones at a concert or restaurant, or on a date! Turn it off!

1) How people treat mac users with such disrespect, or always make comments on how bad a mac system is when they a) havent ever used OSX or b) havent given it enough time.

2) How my windows box is so slow even though i gutted it an replaced almost everything BUT the HD(s).

3) How Steve Jobbs goes to deerfield in three weeks and our chapels are fuggin boring as hell and we dont get the cool guys....GRR

4) how much work i have on a nightly basis, i am up way longer than i want to be just studing for a test or reading a fuggin book.

5) how school consumes my social life, i never leave school, andi am a day student, its not bad cuase i see my friends but sometimes it nice to go home and just relax instead of getting out of school at 3, having practice untill 5:30ish and then not even getting outta the locker room untill 6. then its either i eat there or try to go home, but even then i have been there since before 8 o'clock. just someitmes pisses me off.

6) how julia continues to wildly filirt with me even though she is trying to get back with her old b/f. MAKE UP YOUR MIND BIZNACH!

I got a reply:

I wanted to start this thread going strong again, because people really need to let stuff out...

Me? I HATE Amazon.com ... I hate, hate, HATE it! I go to buy some stuff on there, and it says, "eligible for free super saver shipping" or some BS like that.

Anyway, I buy 2 things that put me over $25, as is says you need, and I go to checkout and all ... don't you know when I click that button it slams me with a shipping charge?! WTF?

It said FREE shipping if your order was over $25, mine was $26 and some change. It's stuff like that I HATE about Amazon.

That, and the fact that I try to buy a CD and get 800 "suggestions" of music that's not even remotely close to the type of music that I like.

Stupid Amazon!

kirupa
November 11th, 2003, 03:32 PM
You need to check the option for free shipping. That option is not the default setting. If your product hasn't shipped yet, you can go back, and under shipping, ensure that you have checked that option.

Also, purchases from the Amazon Marketplace or zShops do not contribute to the $25 total :)

I'm talking to my friend Pete, and he tells me about this girl he met at a frat party. He said she was pretty good lookin and all, and they were talking/dancing for a while. They were getting along quite well, as I hear, and then after like 45 minutes he said, they moved off the dance floor to chat a bit more. She asked him what his major was, and when he said, "Computer Science," she bailed. Didn't say anything, just turned and walked away.

Now that is pretty jerked if you ask me!

Ugh, so even as I'm reading this thread...

I had gotten to page 3, when I decided to take a break and find something to drink. I went to the kitchen and saw the blender jsut sitting there... I opened the freezer and there is some ice cream... naturally I did what I do, decide to make a milkshake. Okay so that's not what I do but whatever it sounded cool.
Alright so I get the ice cream in there, and then pour some mile, and think 'I hope this is assembled.' Milk comes pouring out the bottom and all over the counter and floor. For some reason, someone had forgotten to screw on the bottom of it when they decided to set it out as if it were ready to go?! So I clean up the mess, and decide to brave the blender. IT's staticy, and buzzing. Shocks me. I shake it myself.

Okay so I have some other stuff I gotta get offa mah chest:
-Low wage at a tough job (it doesn't seem tough but it is!)
-Being awake till four every night just because. I hate insomnia.
-Failing my logic final because I didn't study, when I totally should have and I knew it
-having a broken car
-Wanting to hear a specific CD (counting crows: august and everything after), and having that CD in your broken car, at the mechanics, and the only burn you have of it is scracthed up
-Not being able to drive now, and having to rely on my parents which means I go when they say  I'm going to the store in a few, apparantley, guess why, to buy milk :sigh:
-Not having time to write all the rants I want.
I'll be back though. But I'll leave on a happier note...

-My parents... some general things but mostly that they are sooo dag gum annoying sometimes...
-People (see above.txt) interrupting inportant things (read posting_on_forum.txt)
-not having DSL :P

customer Rants
from what I can tell xxiii can sympathize with these most likely!
-Telling a customer to do something but they totally ignore you

-Customer asking stupid questions about what you JUST TOLD THEM. Repeat phrase, word for word, back at them. For some reason they don't even notice...
-Smelly people!

-People that ask my opinion and then ignore it entirelly and simply rent Fast and the Furious

-People that want the movie that 'shows the whole movie'. Yes, they always mean FullFrame. *sigh*

-People that get mad at me cause I don't have the movie in FF to rent, nor to buy, and sorry, I didn't test it before I rented it to you.

-People that think they deserve a credit for no reason, ie 'I didn't like this, I want a different one' or 'you don't have this movie so I want a free one'. What the heck?

-People that want a bag for one movie cause they'll be 'shopping in the store next door'. Guess what, they aren't going to accuse you of stealing a rented movie from them that says our name.

-People that ignore me! When you walk in and someone says hello to you, SAY IT BACK, do NOT keep walking, or, the worst, glance at them but do NOTHING to aknowledge that they exist... they will immediatly dislike you...

-People that get pissed over four dollars, and tell me that they were 'only an hour late'. I'm sorry, did you stop listening to yourself halfway through that sentence?
well one of us did

-People that pass blame. I've done it too, we all have. But it's SO obvious when you are behind the counter, when the person starts getting personal about a movie checked in DAYS ago, not by you, and they are saying that 'you are ripping them off'. Guess what: it's done on a schedule and with a computer. But, I guess I singled you out, set all your movies aside and then checked them in the next day. If any of you readers ever get mistakes in customer service, trust me: stay calm and sort it out. Understand the situation. Don't immediatly start yelling. When people are nice to me, I'm nice to them; it's human nature.

The kirupaForum mailer is the notification e-mail system that sends you an e-mail when you subscribe to a thread. When someone replies to that thread, you get a notification in your e-mail box from a mysterious kirupaForum Mailer person about the activity in your subscribed thread.

When people reply to the kirupaForum mailer with further questions, they don't realize that that message goes straight to my mail box. Nobody reads it except me, who then has to reply back and inform them not to reply to the e-mail.

Another thing that bugs me is when people have auto-responders set to their e-mail. When someone subscribes to a popular thread like the Word Association Game or Movie Quotes, everytime a response in those popular threads occur, their auto-responders ensure a message is sent to the kirupaForum Mailer, and indirectly, me :P

This isn't really a rant for I have the Spam filters set to intercept all kirupaForum mails except "Thread complaints sent to all Moderators!" :)

Might as well take my stab at ranting:

Ok, so theres this game called Halo: CE. Its a redone Halo PC that allows for custom made maps and has tons of improvements over Halo PC. When it was released, everyone was all happy and joyful, but now the people who were happy on release have moved onto b!tching about it. It makes me so angry, how these people think they're allowed to complain and flame and troll all day long, and when the moderators hand down punishments, they get all up-in-arms about how theres free speech on forums. There was this one guy from the Netherlands who said "This is America, and I can say what I bloody well want to!" when he was flaming about how his buddy got banned. Now, is there something wrong with this picture? Since when were forums places for people to flame and carry themselves on in such an immature way? It drives me nuts. People are looking, seeking for things to complain about, and when they do find the smallest, tiniest problems with things in the game/forums, they blow them completely out of proportion. I mean, what in hell's name is making them come to the forums in the first place? If you don't like the game, why do to the game's forum? Post once, speak your peace, and get the hell out! Argh.

Much better :)

People that don't show up for meetings. This is really bothering me today because I drove an hour to see a potential client and the mofo said she "didn't have time to see me today."

Boy I was pissed. I almost told her off but instead I kept my cool and chatted with whoever I could within the office and ended up meeting the owner to whom I requested a meeting with while tactfully revealing how his subordinate "couldn't find the time" for our meeting that was scheduled two weeks ago.

The owner was unimpressed and embarrassed to say the least. The fact was that, in his eyes, I (a 24 year old that looks about 20) was more professional then his second in charge. He went and got the inconsiderate b**** that I had the appointment with (I'm sure he gave her hell) and we all sat down and discussed some ideas about marketing their company. The owner absolutely loved my ideas and undermined the b**** several times during our discussion (I loved every minute of it <insert devil smiley>). However, when the time came to arrange another meeting I discovered I'd be dealing with the B**** from here on in. Anyways, the B**** obviously hates me so I sent a tactfully written email to the owner stating that his participation was crucial to the success of the project and I'm waiting to hear back.

This should be a fairly easy project but I won't even bother with it if I have this unorganised b**** to deal with. I'd really like the money but my gut is telling me to run if I have to deal with her. Why can't everyone have the same work ethic as I do? ?<insert scratching head smiley here>

I so love undermining seniority that live under the pretence of thinking they know what they are talking about by using cliches. Its especially good when you start talking in depth and they say something and you retort by questioning the relevance of that statement and then get backed up by director level, thats happened to me before and I just buzzed for the whole meeting (suffice to say I thought the manager in question was a looser anyway)

yes indeed! Or maybe if it were the ones that are nice, usually those in customers serivce themselves. It's always funny when I meet someone that can push all the right buttons, and for once they aren't the buttons to get at me. I usually then ask if they work in customer service, to which they usually reply yes.

Its too early for snow like this. Even in Boston.

You know what really ticks me off? I'm from South Philly ... agreed we're really just a step above New York in terms of accents, but I don't think we're as bad. Still, I say my things which people always give me flak for. I may say 'woader' intstead of 'water' but I never misconstrue normal grammar.

I get SO ticked hearing people criticize and make fun of my accent when they go walking around saying, "yeah - like earlier today whenever so-and-so did ____." I may not always pronounce words the best - I've got my own way of doing it, and I'm not saying it's the right way, but I know when and when not to use the words "when" and "whenever" and that is certainly not one of those times to use whenever.

It's "Whenever I go fishing, I wear a hat" or some junk like that. If you're talking about a specific time and place, it's WHEN, not whenever. When you're talking about a generic, multiple "times," then you use whenever. I may talk like I'm mentally challenged, and I may not be able to spell the best, but at least I know good grammar when I see it.

And what's this about "slippy" and "needs cleaned" that I keep hearing from people around me?

It's not slippy outside when there's ice. It's slippERy - as in the signs you always see, ,"slippery when wet." The ice is slippery. And "needs ____"? How do you leave out a phrase like "to be" ... it's pretty much the essence of the english language. "The car needs fixed, and the house needs cleaned." WTF?! That's not even CLOSE to the right way of saying it!

F'ing people, man ... They're always right, and I'm always wrong - it never fails.

Bro, All I can say is:
Thankl GOD Comcast bought out my region. I had similar problems for over three years. One time in particular... I knew my rented ($10/mo on top of my broadband bill) cable modem bit the dust, they still had to send out a tech (3 weeks later) to tell me it was dead.

A $20 radio shack jobbie and a buy-out solved my prob. I feel your pain though - talk about treating your customers like they are aborted kittens.

Oh that's like the Sprint customer care insisting on telling me that I need a cable between my bluetooth enabled phone and bluetooth powered pc in order for bluetooth to work between the two. Why would I need bluetooth then??Or when I request the amount on my bill to the automatic system and they give the bill for another customer, or when I choose by voice "representative" and it says "you chose questions about your bill, is that right?" Tonight after a long "chat" with the automatic system I addressed it some "sweet words". Right after that it said: "Alright , I'll transfer you to a representative."

When Mark Cuban ain't happy, I ain't happy :(

I found out about Dallas losing on a taxi back home, and I thought the cab driver was joking when he first told me about it. There are only few things that I really really look forward to in sports, and Dallas winning the playoffs is one of them.

sen - my comcast experience was not as bad, but annoying. I have to use an installation software to configure their cable modem to work with my connection. The worst part was that their installation program is a javascript/html "web site" masked as a program. It was probably a Visual Basic app. That would work well except, the only browsers I can run are IE7 and FF. Both of which are, ironically, not supported. There was no way to run the HTML files separately either.

I spent an entire evening formatting my Vista drive, loading up XP, setting up the modem, formatting XP/reinstalling Vista, and then finally be able to access the internet. Oh well. I'm lucky I didn't have to go through the pains and delays that you did though!

I'm normally a very calm person.

The thing I get annoyed the most is how people mistake my everyday, normal face with an angry look. If i'm not smilling or making someone laugh, then it's "Oh! He's mad..." or "What got into you?"

Luckilly I have had little contact with my ISPs tech support for so long! That makes me happy. You wait 30min to a crappy song, to get to a person who you need to instruct on how they should help you out. When they finally understand what I've been trying to get them to say, then it's going to take a few days to get the IT person near my house to replace the busted modem.

Every time it happens I need to be there. Just in case the idiot doesn't know what a router is... God forbid the guy is knowledgeable enough to configure a router, or even use one. Not that it's needed since it's usually nothing but change dead modems they come in for.

Another thing is store clerks on computer shops. I go in to ask them about something about their material and I always feel like saying "Why don't you let me do it?". Nobody knows anything in those places. Whenever that happens it usually means I'm never setting foot in those shops again.

IE usage... Most people could have most their computer problems solved if they switched from the most used product to something else... Like lynx.

I was working on a new banner to change the look of the site of the company I do a part-time job for. Although I could do this job from my own computer. I know they'll never let me be a remote worker because, even tho they keep saying they don't need me as computer support, they are always using me for just that. Besides the fact that it's me that changes the backup tapes everyday.
I have a boss, who also is my father, so there is no way I can say no to him.
It's a fragil relationship and he has the mentality of a moth sometimes.
If you frighten them away they'll fly randomly for a long time until you see them again. Time which is probably comsumed bumping their head into the same thing over and over.

So the fact that I like some of the previous banners I made really can't go into the constructive criticism he gives me. So everytime something is "wrong" with that site I have to reedo it until his personal taste is being appeased.

Latelly I've been trying to hint that we should get the site re-done in flash.
That would be my first flash site. Personally I like the simplistic flash site look.

I believe it's never going to happen. My father is really old school on his preferences. Even with the site... (http://www.formast.com)

That's being re-done to include an version in English.
Probably an intro page as well, even if just to allow the choosing of those languages.
I have very serious questions if I'm ever getting that site to look better, but I'll keep trying...

I hate tech sites that have that big link for live support "24/7" and you click on that link and an applet starts and your computer freezes and you wait 5 minutezs for the damn thing to load and just when you think you finally got it, the page redirects to some crappy contact form and all you get is "AWAY, leave a message"! And you think maybe the tech support is gone to the bathroom..you know...and you try later. But no, live tech support isn't at the bathroom, isn't at lunch, isn't on coffee break...there is no live tech support at all! I hate them, I really do!
Oh, and yes..and when you have a connection problem and you get phone tech support and they say "we're sorry, we currently have some issues..." And you ask how long will those issues last. And they reply "How would I know?"!! WHO is supposed to know if not you? Santa?

WTF! Gah theyare so annoying. I open up the first package and am like, 'Hmm. Starburst.' Then I attempt to open the wrapper but it owns me and I end up eating the wrapper.

It's like one of those Russian babushka dolls or when someone wraps a present the size of a human fist in like 100 layers of wrapping paper.

If anyone is in the market for buying an ATV, don't by the Can-Am 500 or lower. The suspension on those things sucks the big one. So far I've blown two struts on my 500. Even though they replace them on warranty, it's just going to keep on happening because they only have a single a-arm and thus all of the inwards force on the wheel is transferred onto the strut. My left-front strut is leaking oil like a beast and I now I have to take it in even though I really need to use it. I wish they could just give me a replacement strut for free and I could put it one quickly, but of course the dealer must do the work to get it on warranty - which is reasonable I suppose. All in all I'm considering forking over a piss-load of money to upgrade two a 650 or 800, both of which have dual a-arms on the front suspension. I realize that probably nobody will care, but I just had to let it out :m:

Since lately I've been doing mostly coding, I haven't upgraded from CS2 to CS3 (i might skip to CS4 already..).But yesterday evening a client sent me files done in CS3 and of course, I was unable to open them right. So I say "let's head on to adobe and get the trial version for CS3" Well, downloaded and extracting...and setup stops. Nothing happens, no error, no nothing. Just some MS executable lost god knows where, very unconspicuous and...idle. After a few tries of "click setup, wait, kill process" I went to my favourite bookmark and researched the problem. I downloaded a session cleaner from Adobe(which has 2 levels of cleaning, with other 2 super levels hidden), but in order to make that one work I had to download another cleaner from MS. It didn't help. A few more google results later I learnt that sometimes the only solution is to remove all other CS2 software or even all Adobe programs from the system in order to have a clean install and then I cried a little. Anyway, I said goodbye to Photoshop CS2 and reluctantly uninstalled it. I uninstalled Illustrator. I even uninstalled Acrobat. And then tried again. It.Didn't.Help. I was at the end of my patience and went to remove all traces of the dratted CS3 from my pc and I was mildy amused to see that I could uninstall it from Remove apps, although the damn thing never got to install. But the surprise of it all came when I pressed Remove application. Photoshop CS3 started to install. Well...

^ haha.. I can feel your pain, I stupidly installed this at work (as a install this over lunch scenario) and lost 2 full days with unistalling and reinstalling the master suite trying to get it to work.. eventually I did the highest level cs3 script clean - uninstalled all apps and properties of adobe and got it working! Making up the time lost was a pain as well..not happy memories. :(

^Yea, adobe has a very weird connection between each of its versions. If your registry gets corrupt for a CS4 product so does your registry for your CS3 products. It's really annoying (makes sense due to upgrades), but it's very annoying.

How oreos are packaged... makes it hard to keep them fresh for long periods of time; and when they arent fresh, they get soggy

Almost 5 years later, that problem has been fixed!

Oooh I wonder what I was complaining about five and a half years ago since I apparently semi-deleted my posts. I'm sure it was really important high school things.

Right now I AM UPSET THAT I AM LIGHTHEADED! SHOOP DA WOOP!

I have started wrapping hair around my finger and pulling it out… I'm not even stressed. I've got to find some way to stop.

It’s really sad that I was doing that just as I found that post. :-/

Sometimes flash cs3 gives me the error 'expecting Right bracket after program' then i put in a right bracket in and it says 'found extra characters after the program' and shows the right bracket i just put in. WHAT KIND OF CRAP IS THAT!!!!oneoneone

Then i find out my code is messy, but still, thats a lame error.

I tell you that I'm not interested in you that way. Then you call me and leave me a message to call you back to go out. I never do. Then you send me a message and ask me what I'll be doing today. I never answer. Then you send me another message to ask if I wanna go out with you tonight. For Pete's sake, what does a girl have to do to get her point across?

It's bad enough you have to convert all the tab indentions into spaces, but it REALLY annoys me when you start reordering the class members in a source file. That totally destroys my ability to diff easily. :fight:

I have been given about a hundred QuarkXPress files that I need to bring into InDesign. No problem, you say? The problem is, the idiot that created the QXP files set up each column as separate text boxes. And still dropped in a million tabs.
