Does anyone know if this type of image editing has a specific name? Also, any information on how to achieve it? I can tell the background has a lot of work with the "shadow/highlight" filter. As for the subjects themselves, there's a lot going on and it's a little difficult for me to decipher. I posted a couple links below to samples of ones I've come across. Thanks for any and all help!
Example #1 (http://alicyablake.com/archives/207)
In this site, John uses the effect on mostly ALL images. Some seem more intense than others.
Example #2 (http://www.johnsegesta.com)
This site uses a lot more PS editing for the backgrounds. But, the people are still real photos, just edited uniquely.

hyper realistic? it's mostly editing the photos through curves and levels and using blending modes (soft light over a desaturated layer with varying opacities). the person then just cut the guy (example 1) and fence out [1 layer] and created a background behind those [bottom layer].

Thanks for the response HalfDog. I've found that this particular method of execution is called "HDR". In a nutshell, you begin with an experienced photographer that has a very good understanding of light treatment. Take several shots (3-10) all at different exposures and layer them using photomatrix or similar software. Then blend in certain exposures with masks manually to achieve the desired look & add personal artistic flair.
Sounds fairly easy, but I'm sure it's not. Hope this helps you in learning something new as well. Cheers!

There are sets that may do similar things as the "HDR" effect does, but not as detailed. There's a lot of steps involved in this technique. Perfecting it is at the mercy of the artist and where they are satisfied.

davidabraham, i had to read your post 5 times to clearly understand what you were saying. I think this will help you see what this thread is referring to.

You can use filters, channels, and in image menu there are lots of functions available to do that type of image.

You can do HDR in Photoshop itself and the latest versions of Photoshop CS4 & CS5 do a great job of it.
