View Full Version : PHP, SQL, Dreamweaver MX and, of course, suicide.

Incomprehensible! That is the word.

I got a great PHP book and did some forms and things. Seemed easy enough. But, I can't really connect it with MySQL for ****, have no idea how to update and upload files. An admin page or e-commerce would be nice, but editing OSCommerce makes me quiver and puddle up, roll into a ball and rock back and forth in the corner.

Dreamweaver MX tutorials are actually harder than just writing PHP code line for line by looking at a book.... because, for one thing, I open a php file and it's completely blank white, so there's nothing to look at but code. This might be because I can't seem to set up the Remote Site and Testing Server features properly for some reason. (Oh, I do all my FTPing through Dreamweaver, but as soon as I try for dynamic content, I'm screwed in the behind with a chainsaw).

Are there some really, really easy tutorials you would recommend?

Ready to cry and possibly have a nervous breakdown,

P.S. Don't get me started on my XML database research that was 2 full days of wasted time.

lol

what's the php book you're taking about? :)

Did you try www.phpfreaks.com? It's a good PHP community with a lot of tutorials.. :)

Jubba is working on some xml/sql/php tuts, those should help you too!

The book was "PHP Fast & Easy Web Development" by Julie C. Meloni. It's a lot easier than messing with Dreamweaver MX, that's for sure. Might even be faster in the long run, cuz I don't see ever cracking this Dreamweaver mystery.

I'll share some tutorials I've bookmarked over the last year. You can see how blockheaded I am by the sheer number of decent tutorials and free codes and the simple fact I'm still retarded about PHP

Um... well, thanks, but I understand how to use Dreamweaver up to, let's say, UltraDev 4. The only part of it I don't understand is dynamic content.

I use dreamweaver but I don't test my PHP in the DW preview screen. I upload to my server and test that way. Don't use DW to connect to your database. Its better to just learn how to code your connections and upload your files. :)

Oh,, I didn't even know you could do that with DW :P

I, too, run my files on my server.. definitely a better way to test :)

Thanks, guys. That makes me feel a lot better. Yeah, I guess that would be obvious, now that I think about it... I mean, coders aren't usually all for WYSIWYG apps. I was just thinking it would streamline and prepare me for a "real work" environment at other places where Dreamweaver MX is the norm... but, a "real work" environment in other places should include a real programmer, no doubt. (Currently I'm the web "guru" here-- ha, ha, I have to laugh at that one! I'm sure you got a good chuckle, too).

Thanks again. You've really helped me out with just a couple sentences. F DMX! MF!
