Hi-ya guys. Its my turn to be random...

Okay I am trying to go for the most economical way.
What would be cheaper a used car or motorcycle. I dont need it to lug baggage around or anything big. I just need it to get me to school and to work.

I just want to see if some people owned both and what comes out cheaper in terms of acctualy price of the vehicule, gas and insurance. Thats pretty much it.

not sure about gas and insurance, but a used cycle is definitely cheaper to buy (plus its a chick magnet), i mean you can get a car for less, but its probably going to be a lemon. you can get a GOOD cycle for pretty cheap in like the classifieds.

Acctualy I find it hard to find cycles for cheap...
There are not bad cars, for like 700 $

The only thing I can find for that is an old dirtbike.

Anyway, are you sure?

700 bucks???!!! i wouldnt go for that, at that price, ur bound to get stranded somewhere, i mean theres got to be a reason that they are selling it for almost nothing.

btw, im not an expert by any means...

motorcycles are way cheaper but insurance will kill ya.....and not many people keep there motorcycles long either sell them or crash. It is more a novelty item you get tired of it quick. I would never have a motorcycle as a main vehicle and you will see why in the winter. Riding a bike in the rain is the scariest thing I have ever done. Get a cheap car. I have a bike now and I do not ride it much until the summer.

I like motorcycles, but I'd have to tell you to go with a car. I think it makes more sense, even though it's easier to park a bike somewhere.

The weather is a huge issue to look at.

insurance on a bike is WAY cheaper than a car. my insurance is only $445 a year CAD vs. the $3200 CAD a year I'd be paying to insure a vehicle.

not many people keep their cycles long? most people, once they get on a bike get so addicted that they never stop riding. sure, it's impractical for lugging baggage around and for the winter, but most would agree the feeling of riding a bike on an open, windy road is like no other.

and, riding a bike in the rain is perfectly safe... i do it all the time. all you need is a good lens on your helmet with teflon coating (most new helmets do) and the rain doesn't stay on your visor at all. if your tires are in good condition, a bike's traction will be just fine in the rain. i dunno how often you ride, but you should practice in the rain more if it scares you since you could be caught in a rainstorm at anytime while you're out on the road...

I live in hawaii, rain is a vintage item here.. or at least on the side of island I live on. And weather is pretty much the same, its all a matter of cost for me.

New, yes, you can find bikes cheaper, but you can also get used cars for like $200. Cars are everywhere - motorcycles not so much, and I can imagine the problem is compounded living in Hawaii.

I don't think asking the question will provide a solution though. You just need to get out there and look to see whats available... which it seems you've for the most part done. If you cant find a cheap bike, you's just have to go for a cheap car.

isn't upkeep of motorcycles considerably more expensive (and frequent) compared to cars? that was always the impression I got.

Not quite. :) It's called a Carver, made by a Scandinavian company if I recall correctly. It actually tips to one side as you turn the wheel. The harder the turn, the more it leans. :P

I have been riding for quite sometime. Also ride with a bunch of folks. ANd most people do not keep there bikes...Things like life kick in. Kids. wives.....stuff like that. This is my 3rd bike and it is really a novelty item I ride it in the summer when I want to look cooler than I already am. Hydro-Planing on a bike is not cool at all. While there is no law against it. It is advised not to ride a bike in the rain. Visibiltity can be harsh and if it is windy and slick or icey. They do not make tire chains for bikes. If you are in Hawaii and the rain is plenty I would not get a bike as a main vehicle......or that funny looking pod thing....is that thing for real?

well, thats the thing if there was lots of rain, I wouldnt even consider getting a bike, but on Oahu South Shore, its real dry.

Like I said, I only need a vehicule to get from point a to b, thats it. Would the economical choice be a cycle then?

lol 3d, no offense but you really don't seem like a biker. i've never heard of anyone who talks about riding that way... bikes aren't "novelty items", for many it's a way of life, and that includes if they have kids and especially if they have wives. sure, it's impractical if you're planning on carting a family around everywhere, but that's not what russian is planning on doing :P

and you only ride your bike to look "cooler"? hmmm... what do you ride?

and yeah... of course they don't make tire chains for bikes! lol, and you'd never use tire chains for the rain!!! that'd be like a scene out of mr. bean :beam:

right now I am running a Hayabusa (just sold a r1). Biking is more of a hobby. But do not get me wrong bikes are cool. But in Hawaii where it rains alot is just not the most practical thing to do. When you look at what he is asking. A bike as a main and only vehicle to me is not good. But that is from experience. I have just grown up a lil more than most bikers I guess :beam: . I guess that makes me a lil less of a biker since I put a lil forethought into it. But a bunch of my friends feel the same.

in that case man get a bike if it is just a straight line type of thing and the weather is pretty fair year round. But when you wake up and it is pouring and you have to get to class or work not to mention cold......you will regret not have something with sides and a roof. But believe me bikes are fun cool and economical....just not the most practical.
