Somewhat Urgent - Subdomains, how do they work?

Hi could someone please expalin how subdomains work, and how I got about doing it?

how do i make that domain point to a folder on my web server?

Check your domain control panel, my domains are hosted at enom and they have 20 subdomain options.I am currently using 3
http://sms.jasninder.com
http://hutchmail.jasninder.com
http://webmail.jasninder.com
