Online Metal CD Store

In my time of need, I turn to you guys. :) I'm pretty exhausted at the moment. Just handed in 2 assignments in 2 days and I literally spent from 9am to 5:20pm today in front of a computer finishing an assignment (minus a half hour break). I have a group assignment due on Friday and somehow its ended up with me doing the site design.

I have no artistic ability at all so please help me out with some ideas. Basic idea is to design a site that acts as an online store. We've chosen a CD store that specialises in metal music:evil: I know the colours you would probably use are black, red and greys but I need some ideas for the design. Basic navigation down the left hand side of the page with logo top right? Maybe incorporate some skulls or something?

Well the assignment was up on the website from the first few weeks when the semester started so its been out for a while. But there has been lots of other work that has had priority in between.

I've heard of Hatebreed but never of their music, but what I was kind of thinking of was along the lines of www.metalshop.com.au (http://www.metalshop.com.au) and www.sanity.com.au (http://www.sanity.com.au) maybe.

i'm not even going to compare croatian national music (passed down from generation to generation) to the screaming mess that is hatebreed.


at least i have respect for my culture, and even though i might not like all of the national music, i still accept it and i certainly DON'T make fun of it.

back to helping TOOL: what are you actually looking for m8? ideas for the way the page is laid out? perhaps have a main categories navbar across the top (under the logo of course) with a search thingy.. navbar on the left can be used for sub-ection navigation and main part of the window for information?

*shrugs* :) What I'm looking for is pretty much what you just said which I'm happy with but I think it's the physical appearance that I need some ideas for... How do you make something stand out as "metal". Obviously you want it to appeal to your customers so that's why I thought about skulls etc?

I was looking at metalshop.com.au - i'd say that was a good place to start getting inspiration from. it's a pretty cool site (not that I'm esp into metal) gives the info, makes things easy to search for/find etc.

Yep it's a good site to draw inspiration from but I don't want to get into the trap of it being a replica or something that looks like it.

Maybe to make it look "metal" all I have to do is create some images for the background or whatever and make it look messy yet organised if that makes sense?

purple and black ... That might be cool. I think a jagged, sharp, edgy look to the site might be really good. You know, nothing rounded or smoothed, and no color fades. When one color stops, the other starts.

Chaos is what I can best describe it as. Get out a sketch book or somethin, and just start drawing goofy lines and all on the paper. That's how I come up with some of my designs.

P.S. You may not like the screaming Hatebreed music, but you must admit, they have VERY inspirational lyrics that, despite what some people say, you can understand. 'Perseverance' is a much more respectable song than 50 cent's 'P.I.M.P.'

Thanks for your help everyone. I just thought I'd do a follow up post and show you guys what I ended up with.

Pics are roughly 150-180kb. Had to lower the quality a bit to make them reasonably easy to download.

I used Photoshop Elements to draw everything. I'm buggered if I know what the difference between Photoshop and Photoshop Elements is! :P

:edit: ok only one page works and I don't think it even displays properly, oh well, I'm sure there's not a big demand to see it anyway :P
