What exactly does disk defragmentation do?
I'm guessing that I want more blue bars than red bars? :h:

when files are written/modified/whatever your computer will sometimes put pieces of the file in other parts of your harddrive. when your computer uses those files, it just points to the next fragment of the file on your HDD. What defragging does, is it pieces them back together, so your HDD doesn't have to look far for the pieces of the file. This improves overall disk performance. I'm guessing you're using 2000/XP. The blue represents files that are contigous, or files that are all together in one chunk. The red represents files that are in pieces, or frags on your HDD. The green are files that the Defragger isn't going to touch (usually System files, etc).

Perfect Disk 6.0 is a great defrag application. The one included with Windows is alright, but Perfect Disk is the best thing I've ever used. I reccomend you just download the demo of PD-6.0 and run it once or twice in the 30 day trial period. After that your drive will be optimized, and the Windows defrag component would be a good tool to just keep everything in order

How much of a difference does the defrag make?

It's ... immeasureable. Your performance will increase dramatically if your HD is totally fragmented, or if it's relatively in order, you'll still see some improvement, but nothing drastic.
It'll make your HD last longer too. If you constanly use a fragmented drive, the disk works overtime trying to find all the fragments of the file and the thing spins frantically all the time. If you have a clean drive, it won't have to run as hard, and it'll more than likely increase the lifespan of your HD.
I know I have my one hard drive from ... at least 6 years ago. It's still moving along :) Now, with Linux! hehehe

I have a question though, from what I used from like, 95-ME, the old fashion like, sorts them all up so it's in the beginning of the drive. But ever since Windows 2000, it's leaving chunks of blank in between a lot.

Defragging is the next best thing to sliced bread! I've always read that it is better to defrag your comp every week or so. Your HD is probably dying T-O.

In your case it is very simple ... just post anything ... and magically, several sarcasm tags will appear in the next few entries...
