This is a question that not many people ask anymore, but when it comes to computers - a lot of people have about that level of knowledge.
Check out this link - it's suggesting the idea of having a LICENSE to use the internet. At first it sounds stupid - but read the article, it makes some great sence.

just because there's a bunch of unsavvy nimrods out there doesn't mean we should all have a license to use the internet. you can't even regulate all that. the internet is not just in the states, it's everywhere. so are we supposed to have ALL the other countries do this too, i don't think so. it wouldn't be that easy.
a ONE MONTH course! come on!! you can learn all that in less than a week if you really try.

I really dont think there is one person on this board that would fail.
I think what they are talking about is the people who have yet to install a program. I know a lot of people who are afraid to even try that. How many people do you know that hav einstalled kazzaa or what have you and installed all the crap that comes with it? It tells you in the instructions that you dont need it, and that you dont have to install it. These people dont know that stuff... they are being prayed on by the people who do know.
I am not saying that this should happen, I am just saying that I can see where it's going. I dont think a month is a good idea, but a 2 or 3 day class or somethng... just to teach you the basics. I know a few poeple that would be ripe for that class :)

are you trying to cut out about 25% of my business Tuknuk?
I have a lot of clients who are "AOL stooooopid" and they pay me money to come in, do updates, install a small proggie or 2, clean up their temp files, cookies, etc...
I love the fact that there are internet unsavvy people out there. We have enough 14 yr olds (looks at Ahmed & Kode) who can code me to death...

hahah you know, I was thinking the same thing when I read the article Rev.
There are a lot of people out there who do this kind of thing and make cash on it. Like setting up firewalls and routers and stuff. If everyone knew how to do it, some people would go out of business! I guess there are downsides to. Not to mention the people who just want to email and thats it - they dont need to know a whole lot I guess. Besides unless they use the knowledge they have - they will loose it within a couple months and be back at squre one anyway :)

If they want to pay me $50/hr to come to their offices once a month to "repair" the stuff they have done to them, cool.
I would much rather see a class on "Escalator Use and Courtesies" instead... like when you reach the end of the escalator, do not stop. Make room for all of the other people who are being mechanically rammed up your butt...
Phew! that's a relief...

I hear in some areas, mainly UK there is a unspoken rule...
If you want to "ride" the elevator you keep left on the steps. If you want to "use" the elevator you can freely pass on the right.

in BART stations (Bay Area Rapid Transit) you ride on the right, pass on the left. It is an unspoken courtesy.
in malls, however, especially with "Tourons", you get the people who stop at the top, in between the handrails of the escalator still...

I dunno if people's rude behavior stops at escalators though. I mean, how many times have you followed a bunch of people through, say, a classroom door and have 4 people just stop right outside, like no on else needs to get any place.
Or when you're walking along the crowded streets downtown, and 2 girls feel the need to stop, hug each other, and stand directly in the middle of the pavement. If you're going to have a conversation, curb it next time, please - do us all a favor.
Back on thread topic, the Internet is a free place to transfer ideas across this digital platform from one user to user(s) no matter who or where they are. We cannot restrict this gift in any matter than it already is. People pay $20 a month as it is already (if not more for us broadband geeks :)) and I think that should be enough. $40 a month for my cable access, that's liscence enough for me!
