I freed up 3 gb of stuff on my hard drive, then it says its full. Then I free 5 more, then the next day it is full. WHAT THE HECK? My comp goes so incredibly slow, and I can't figure out what to do! :(

possibly...

i would run a scandisk (or checkdisk) on your harddrive to make sure you don't have any bad sectors

do you have any antivirus protection?

if all else fails, you could just format it.

De-frag it?

May be a virus...If nothing works, format it and repartition the drives. It should help. Defrag may not help as it sounds like some other problem.

are you running a server of some type by any chance?

Don't waste any more time. Get a copy of Norton or Macfee and gett cleaning. If you do have a copy check to see that your quaranten fodler isn't full of files.

I used to think a virus would never be the problem but I have now realized it almost always is. In the last month I have had Blaster Worm, Nachi, and recenctly W32.Pinfi which was on my systme for months wiht out me knowing.

I'll bet you have NIMDA...

it duplicates files from your hard drive...

Can anyone tell me about NIMDA? I did virus scans, and I am running a server sometimes, Bad Blue. I also have a dual-boot with redhat linux 8.

OK, it appears that I do NOT have NIMDA; I used both removal programs on their website. HOWEVER: Since it says I have no disk space left I dont have enough room to scan my entire hard drive with norton antivirus. I fear I must level the thing... but I have so much stuff... :skull:

Check your temp Dir and try to locate your page files.

XP likes to dump hundreds of megs into paging files, forget about them and start new ones.

Nah I just deleted those... must be somethin else... but I have soooooo much stuff it will take forever to burn it. I could copy it to my other comp with a 100mb lan, I suppose.

...my space is slowly coming back...

do a search of your hard drive, then see sort by size, so you can see what files are huge, then sort by location, so you can see where those files are, then sort by date, so you can see when they were put there... (I had a hacker store 10.5 gigs of warez on my machine without my knowledge once)...
