You might want to post this in Random or Forum Help...

in here it faces the wrath of Kit... something I'd stay the right side of ;)

I'm in a generous mood, so my wrathwill be restrained for the time being. ;)

I'm moving this to Random, I think it's the best place, now that I'm aware of the thread and the idea. :)

so how would we make our "HTML SOTW" different from the plethora of others out there giving away awards to whomever can figure out how to submit....

just curious.

how ould it be different from the flash sotw?? Or is it because there will be quite a few more submissions?? I would love to have a section like that because most of my clients do html and some of my sites are pretty cool but just not flash. However after thinking about it, it would be rather hard to judge. But with a lil effort I think ya'll could at least beta test it. I would donate some time if ya'll need it.

Well, the idea is pretty good, but our requirements for a SOTW are around 50% Flash, and there are a great number of good sites that we get. This is predominantly a Flash/Design site, and the sites that win should reflect that.

I'm sure there are great HTML sites out there, but our focus is on Flash. Sites don't have to be 100% Flash to win, and we have tried to accomodate those sites that are designed really well and contain only a moderate amount of Flash

well, kirupa, we aren't mainly a flash site anymore (in my eyes at least), yes the tutorials are for flash, but i know we already have a few tut's for other stuff (DW i.e.), and we ARE expanding to more than flash on the boards too :)

but HTML SOTW is something one could get on other sites aswell, many awards to win out there, so... :)

Maybe later on...

IMO....

I'm going now... :P

I think it is still a good idea. You can announce the opening. Then only let a certain amount in for the period. Then judge those on design, cross browser.......I would seriously be a mod just of that portion (html SOTW voting). And yes there are some cool awards for html out there. But me being a long standing member here. I would love to post my work here since unfortunately most of my work has been html javascript and ASP. I believe it would be a very positive dimension for this site and this forum. Imagine the html knowledge that is here. But any who....I think the big K has said no. But I just felt like saying something. Although I think this could boost this forum up just that much higher.

hmm well, think that's a bit harsh. the whole idea is you would have to get a bunch of entries so that doesn't happen, but i do hear that i guess

I think this could be cool, but then again I don't have to do anything about it.

our of curiosity why do you think it is a bad idea jubba? It will increase traffic here and give kirupa more visibility. the bad part I do see is more work or a need for more mods. Which I do know everyone here has a life outside of Kirupa. ut I would volunteer some time to make it work. Just think it would be a good idea. Especially since DW MX 04. Alot of better html sites are going to be popping up.

OK, this old phart is gonna toss his 2¢ worth into the mix. I think a Site of the MONTH for sites actually done for clients might be a better idea.

oo like real sites, with a real purpose, using any combination of medium

no personal sites, either for your actual design company or for a client...

that is a bit strict but a nice starting point to curb a bunch of errant entries. I think the award would be a prestigous one almost like macromedia site of the day. Just think how many more will come......attract more flash experts and stuff.....I think it would be a wonderful idea. But I think we better stop beating this one b4 some mod with the turbo ban button bans us all.

I have a couple of clients that I serviced thru my company that I have done some cool stuff design wise with HTML DHTML and ASP,XML. I would submit them but under your rules I could not.

Well no argument intended I would love to see it happen and would donate time to putting it together....you hear that big K. If your up there show me a sign. (but dont ban me :beam: )

The primary problem is the time constraint. If we are going to be giving out awards, I believe that the mod critiques play a greater role than the actual award itself. That's one of the key features that separates our award from those of other sites.

If we were to add HTML, that would be a strain our mods' times. There are plenty of sites that do HTML awards, and let them dish out those awards. The amount of time and dedication needed to make an HTML-only award far outweighs the costs when most of the visitors who post on this site are usually somehow interested in Flash.
Just think how many more will come......attract more flash experts and stuff.....I think it would be a wonderful idea.
Well, Flash experts would have something created in Flash ;)

This idea sounds great, but I can't visualize it as something that will work in the context of this site. Why would this site hand out HTML-site awards? I have no doubt that some of the members here have excellent HTML sites, but the current SOTW structure is lenient....some would say too lenient at allowing sites with only 50% Flash to enter and even win.

The mods and I discussed this issue several times, and most of us felt that the current method works well. We may change our minds at a later time, but I'm not sure if we are quite ready at this point....

Cheers!

nuff said......guess I'll keep collecting my golden (cheap) webbies :) But I am working on my site which I think will get SOTW here. hopefully....cheers and yes your current system does work......If you decide to re-visit this I will devote some of my time to make it happen.

I too disagree of having an HTML SOTW. www.kirupa.com's main focus is on Flash. And it's SOTW award should be awarded to Flash sites only. I like the SOTW rule before when your site must be at least 80% Flash to qualify. I think it makes www.kirupa.com unique in some way. If www.kirupa.com would have an HTML SOTW it would then be just like any other award giving body on the net like www.coolhomepages.com. Also more people would just join the forum to submit their site and not really explore what www.kirupa.com is all about! (IMO)

disagree.....but it has been spoken no html SOTW

How about a mix of html and flash?

DDD
September 12th, 2003, 11:50 AM
J....right now the criteria is 50% flash.....which I do agree is very lenient especially for the AS challenged such as myself
