This is just about a letter I got from my local "guidance" centre.

I will give you the gist of it but basically I sent them an Email asking about what to do after college and what I can do to become a web designer.

Now I no it is hard to get into and whatever but what they typed back was a disgrace I feel.

Something likes "you should stop where you are and not try to purse this as a career. You should try to find a new path to take and maybe do different courses at college."

Now that was my "guidance" help centre helping me. They don't even know me so how can they say that.

Some ****ing help centre.

When I was 16 and told my careers teacher that I wanted to do computer programming, I was told something along the lines of "that's no job for a young lady, have you thought of becoming a secretary?" :sure:

they also told me that I cannot smoke weed and play basketball......enroute to leading the team to the state championship and averaging 25 ppg. Moral of the story is that is why they are high school guidace counselors and not real ones. I went to school on a scholarship, graduated, played some overseas ball, became a graphics designer, programmer (ASP) and now a business owner. Glad I did not go into heavy machinery operator like my counselor told me in HS.

Accutaly, I was told to become either a accountant, a programer or a dentist..... and to hell with all of them.

And because I am Russian, I am told not to go to any foreign service, inteligence or diplomatic work. Yeah, I can pass as being Quebecois, Canadian American or Russian, to hell with them!

My guidance counselor is fat, and I mean obese fat. Everytime I talk to her about stuff, she'll always offer me food, and when I deny, she eats it all and doesn't listen to me. She suggested I become an 'engineer', then stuffed me with pamphlets and told me to leave.:sure:

I think I got a bit angry when she came out with that classic line. It was a few years ago now, obviously, and true there weren't many women interested in computing, but to tell me that it was no job for a young lady... I mean how dumb can you get? Way to crush my childhood aspirations. :P

That is life my friend. Get used to it :)

For lunch, you are... cooking. Something. Maybe. :sure:

After lunch, you will be slaving away writing a report. Or surfing the forums, I'm easy either way really. :P

It's no wonder I never became a secretary, is it? :)

I had no idea you were a ball player, that's really cool. Did you like your time overseas? Did they pay you enough to have a good life or just enough to eat and sleep there?

And as to not hijack the thread - guidence centres are there for help and ideas, do what you want to do. If you want to be a graphic designer, than do it. If you want to be an electrician - do it. Dont let what one person says stand in the way. If you get into the industry, try it and dont like it, there's always classes you can take again and try something different. Options are always there.

Ever wonder why Golgi is now RedGolgi?

And it wasnt that long ago! I can beleive they do that... I mean my grandmother was a Prosecuter and a Lawyer... and that was 65 years ago! And no one said a thing!

As it so happens, whenever I play Unreal on my PS2, Mariana is the character I choose. :beam:

How's that for co-incidence? :)

Yeah I was a ball player--Still am kinda. I loved it I played in Spain and Mexico. Those places have the sexiest women I have ever seen. The pay was excellent they treat us like kings over there. But basically you can do whatever you want. Just be focused I never reached Michael Jordan status but I tried my best and was successful and I am very well known in my community so just do your best and at whatever it is and you should be ok.

yeah - don't expect people to tell you what to do with your life. As their title states they are 'counselors' your choice belongs to you - and don't let 'em stop you..

I was told by my guidance office that I should be a computer engineer, not a network administrator (which I'm studying to be). The lady REFUSED to hear me and what I wanted to do. So I ended up doing the research myself, and found out Penn State University has one of the FEW, so very few Information Technology majors in the USA. The School (soon to be College) of Information Sciences and Technology is the front-runner in IT related fields of study in the nation, and coming here to Penn State was maybe the best decision I could have ever made.

My advice is to forget advisors ... you have to listen to yourself sometimes. Advisors have only gotten in my way...
