Hello people!!!

I'm after opinions on free forums... I'm currently using Snitz forum which is an ASP forum, which is good but does seem to be bit of a target for naughty people who like to break things... The only other decent forums I seem to be able to find are php, which could well be a problem for me as the rest of my site is ASP...eek!

I know this is a php forum and it seems that most are, I was wondering if someone (more technical than me :nerd:) could give me some advice...?

Which is better PHP or ASP?
Can PHP be run alongside ASP on the same server???
What are your opinions on PHP & ASP forums?
What are your recommendations / experiences regarding forums?
Which one is the best???

Many thanks in advance!!!

Cheers :)

I really have no idea which is better, but you may want to give phpBB a shot: http://www.phpbb.com While vBulletin is not free, I find it to be one of the better forum programs available: http://www.vbulletin.com (vB is what these forums are).

phpBB2 is really good considering it's free! covers all the options you could ever want, stable and sexeh-looking :thumb:

- I never used ASP so I don't really know which one is best ...
- If your server has installed both ASP and PHP, yes :)
- I only know phpBB and vBulletin, and IMO vBulletin is way better.
- Eehm ... pass :P
- vBulletin !

oh yeah, phpbb all the way... only because it's free :P

I helped install a phpbb forum on www.freaqazoid.dk , and he was amazed at how easy it was both to install and maintain.. tho tricky to style properly...

PHP is better than ASP imo:

<ul>
<li>PHP is free....</li>
<li>PHP is open source</li>
<li>PHP is non-Microsoft :P</li>
</ul>

phpBB2 is also pretty good, but it's hard to style properly.

<li>Eilsoe likes ASP :crazy:</li>

just because something is free, and open source doesnt make it better rofl

php's parsing is awesome, but there is much that asp offers that i find more useful, and yes access kicks mysql's but

but again, the age old adage holds true; use whatever you understand and works for you

Cool responses everyone! Thanks!!!

So far you're pretty much all saying PHP...
I will have to check with my hosts, I don't think they support php as well as asp :(

As far as PHP goes, I thought Invision looked pretty good - http://www.invisionboard.com/ Has anyone tried it??

Anyone (ASP-ers) got any feelings on Snitz???

meh... I guess it's what you like...

I went with PHP because the syntax was similar to AS, which I already knew.. and I don't like the syntax of the MS languages like VBScript and ASP.

It also had the advantage of being free. The fact that it's open source is an advantage simply because outside programmers can add things to the language. For example the GD library(which is used to write images dynamically) was added by an outside programmer called Paul Boutell. If PHP wasn't open source, then that couldn't have been added and PHP would be without image manipulation features.

Although it's entirely your choice though. I've nothing against ASP or Perl... I just happen to :love: PHP.

Excuse me??? I believe you are leaving out OpenBB (http://www.openbb.com). Easy to install, and though there arent many skins for it, openbbhacks.com will be here shortly. I prefer it over PHPBB for customization, but PHPBB is easier to skin. I give it an :A+:
