hey babes ... I'd just get an iPod! How big do you need? I think the iPod is a GREAT investment. You can use it like an external hard drive, plus you can play music on it.

That's the way I'd go...

Yeah i think you can do that! In win98se you can. I don't know if you can do that with XP though! But try!

if you have FireWire, i.LINK, or 1394 compatible connection on your computer/laptop you can use an iPod easily. They also have a USB connection for normal people ;O)

iPods can be used on both PCs and MACs, which is why my next computer purchase will be a Macintosh (I just need a change of scenery).

I think the one you showed looks nice, I mean, 160GB is nothing to shake a stick at. It might be kinda slow if you dont' have USB 2.0, not sure how that will go.

I'm from South Philadelphia - on 9th Street, not too far from where the "ROCKY" films were made.

I think you asked me this before Red...

I'm currently at Penn State though, so I'd miss you if you went to Philly :O(

look again for firewire .... add it if you don't have it (PCI card) it'll make all the difference in the world - usb anything is horribly slow compared to fw.

Also, Research and confirm if the drive will allow booting

it's not just the OS - - it is all about the drive, and I forget the "chip name" that will work but there is a difference, they're not all created equal

soma will and soma won't

I want a larger HDD, I've heard that you can covert an internal IDE HDD into an external one with the right kit. I have 2 40GB disks atm, would love one really huge one, like 160GB or something, and still being able to use the other one, and taking it to uni would be useful.

Why you need so much space Red Golgi?!

hey ranoka..
i do cuz im a SPACEHOG

oh yeah, and im in school and ill be transferring all my data back and forth, between home and school, most of which will be enourmosly huge animations, 3d files, videos, sound, ya know, the whole shebang. ;)

I have to look into that.

Im not buying it.

If that were the case then Adobe Premier 6.5 would recomend using USB2 for DV transfer instead of Firewire.

5 minutes of raw DV is like 40GB

u all suck.

BadMagick

I dunno there ... I think my firewire port is uber-cool. I think you're just jealous cause you don't have one :Op

RenaissanceGirl

USB 2 is newish? I had a USB 2 card on my PC for over a year (that's a LONG time in computerland). Also what about Firewire 800? According to this (http://www.firewiredirect.com/firewire/productinfo/firewire800.shtml) it blows USB 2 out of the water.

In any case - in regards to the external hard drive... I believe external hardware is always more expensive than internal.

RelandR

for those who want to dock a salvaged Internal drive .... via firewire / IEEE 1394::

>>check this Goody<< (http://www.wiebetech.com/products/firewiredrivedock.html)

********

...oh and Red: jes pokin' around I keep coming up with the general consensus that FireWire is way faster than USB-2 (all the high end apps recomend it) but haven't seen a side-by-side comparrison that is trustworthy (ie not from someone 'pushing' USB-2) ...yet ..... :)

..but have run across some views that booting via USB would require mods to the bios b4 the machine will allow it (?)

Illuminae

well i think the thing is pretty varied.. some things work faster with usb2 and some with firewire from what i hear.
heres the max speed bit:

USB around 12 or so
firewire 400
usb2 480
firewire 2 (aka firewire 800) 800

so like rengirl was saying, firewire 800 DOES blow usb2 away,
but then again we were talkin about regular firewire so..
;)

anyway, speeds fluxuate and stuff, so. thats it. heh. dinnerfoodtime, leavign now, bye :beam:

RelandR
September 5th, 2003, 06:58 PM
I'd look hard n deep,

USB2's max speed may only apply on certain devices and not nec. w/HD's (?)

I mean FW may be consistant where usb2 fluctuates according to what is connected (?)

have a good dinnerFood

hehe, im back. im not getting an external HD anymore. :( i found out ill have problems switching it from a mac to a pc. so i say screw, ill just hold off, save some $$, and buy a laptop. that'll kill a few birds with one, expensive, not cheap, quite expensive, stone.

Ranoka
September 5th, 2003, 08:16 PM
I wouldn't go throwing a latptop at any birds... seems a bit of a waste of technology...

And yes, external is normally quite a bit more expensive then internal.

All this talk of laptops and new HDD isn't helping... o_O
