Hi all.

I am relatively new to the website design scene so dont laugh at me please!

I am making a website for my girlfriend for her karate school and i have been using frames to do so, but i hear that using frames can be a disaster. I dont know anything about tables or layers, so i was wondering - can i make this site by using either of these? I will learn how if it is possible. Here is my site -

thanks for helping! And not laughing! :)

You can indeed use tables or layers to build the site (or any site for that matter).

Tables mean though that your page will scroll, vertically if not horizontally. So if the text and content is longer than the height of the users' screen, when they scroll down to read it, they will 'lose' the top part of the page, with the logo etc.

This is a big reason why people use frames, as it keeps important items like menus on screen at all times. :)

I'm not a great fan of them myself, but in some circumstances they can be useful. It's a question of compromise - are people likely to try to bookmark your site? If they are, frames may be a bad idea. If not, you can probably get away with using them. :)

too add to what kit said-

if you dont use a fameset each time you click a button a new page has to load. thats not too cool. try IFrame's or a frameset

By far, the easiest way to do that site is to start with a frameset. In that case, (don't feel like looking at it again) I think it's a top frame with the lower frame split into two verticle frames. Save that page as index.html or whatnot and then create pages to open within those frames. ie... the banner at the top, the menu, and then content pages for the mainFrame. Just search for frames tutorial or whatnot. Using an Iframe to make that page would be a pain in the arse if you're not sure what you're doing, so I would recommend using frames, which is extremely easy to do with FrontPage or DW.

you may not want to get to into tables for now.

CSS is the way the web is heading so i would say learn a bit of CSS and you should be fine. i am doing that now and it is great.
