is it at all possible for flash to access images from outside flash the way it draws info from a database?

Flash 5: basically no, combined with Generator yes.
Need to publish every single picture from Flash as a separate swf, so you can use loadMovie, if you only got F5.

Flash MX: yes, yes, yes!!! :) (only jpg) Go get it!
