Is there a reason why whenever anyone prints to my printer (i have it set up for our network) my 2.4 ghz P4 jumps to 100% until it's done printing? is this really necessary? and is there any way to turn it off?

I believe most computers today have that switch on the front of the computer. Switch that off and you won't have to worry about the 100% thing. :)

i'd say setup a printing server on a separate computer that you do not use. the reason why it goes to 100% is because it is downloading the content from the network and has to then send it to the printer. You could also setup a switch to route any printer queries straight to your printer, if it has ethernet, so it doesn't have to go through your computer.

actually I had that same problem. I was running a HP Apollo 2200 on my 2gHz and it slowed down to 100% but my old Lexmark runs fine on my 2gHz...

the funny thing is, on my mom's computer (a 333 mHz) the Apollo runs just fine... doesn't slow the comp down at all...

could it have something to do with the fact that you are using either USB or parallel? perhaps one slows your computer down more?

just a thought

goes through ethernet, prints as if my computer was printing it, the printer is old, and doesn't have ethernet. the problem is that everyone in my family wants to print to my printer because it is the only one upstairs (well my mom has one, but it prints less than a page per minute...)
btw, it's an hp, do you think this has anything to do with it?

haha, i finally figured it out! it was because I was printing it on best quality, i lowered it down to draft, and now it hardly uses any CPU! :thumb: :P
