Hi,
Please check out http://big.dk/big.html and click @bottom any menu item > see the thumbnails rearranging themselves.
My question: How do you realize that effect ? What's the underlying concept / logic / elements necessary to achieve such a filtering effect by categories?
I am no expert but I would appreciate a somewhat technical explanation. Thanks.

my guess would be that each thumbnail would be given a position (x,y) for each category. whether that's done by hand or programmatically from say, a database, i wouldn't know. but then it would just be a matter of tweening them from one x,y to another based on their index in a category. The logic is pretty simple actually, implementation is a bit more complex

Wow very nice pixi! Thanks for taking the time.
I hate to be a party pooper but in the website example the total number of thumbs is always on the screen, it's just being rearranged to follow multiple sorting orders, and sub-categories.
In your version the picture logically appear under their respective categories and the other ones disappear (only the dog pics are shown under the dog category, etc...).
Then again I'm not a coder more a designer so It might be easy to just tweak what you already did. Nice work!
Let me know.

...ok, Im in! Very clever website! Inititally I thought "hmm, pretty cool" (when your lousy at this stuff you can afford to be critical...*grins*) - Then had a wee play with the links at the bottom - "oooh, very cool!"...then, clicked on the Lego box - & clicked through the various stages of the pop-up page - & "WOWOWOWOWOW...thats EXTREME cool" - just the amount of work behind this is incredible! - Thanks for sharing it, brightened my day!

i wonder if that involved some sort of motion capture or if they were tweened by hand
