Hi! I'm making my first flash movie and I tried to insert a movieclip in the general timeline, it has about 23 frames, but when I test the movie, it only flashes for one frame and moves on to the rest of the timeline. Anyone know what might be causing this or how to fix it?

you'll need a stop action on any frame in a series that you want to stop on:
stop();

I put stop(); in the actionscript for the movieclip, any idea why that might not work?

This is just a simple timeline construction issue.
Insert empty frames on the movieclip layer to the end of the main timeline animation.
The movieclip will then exist for the duration of the main timeline animation.
Post the zipped FLA if you can't figure it out.
