w00t i am now browsing with FireBird. Its kinda like a striped down Mozilla build, so its way faster. I havent been going this fast on a browser since i was on my mac like 2 seconds ago with Safari (fastest browser i have ever used, eat that :P).

i recomend trying it!

The negatives I found in firebird and why I will never use it:

You can't click the address bar and then highlight certain parts of it for some reason. A wierd bug.

My scoll button does not work.

Many of the flash sites I went to for some reason couldn't detect that I had flash installed on it, so they'd send me to their "you don't have flash, download it" page.

By using it I'm not supporting Bill Gates.

Nali::
you may have a corrupted download of it... (?)

all of the above are typically untrue of firebird

...I know the drive I am currently on has crash problems with mozillaStuff but the other drive does not.. and I've figured it is more likely due to needing a reinstall

I know dipi. I dl'ed it and put it in the plugins folder and I could come onto the forums and see footers and stuff. But some people's sites (points finger at kirupa) still redirected me to their "you don't have flash" pages.

Firebird is cool but it has problems with either my mouse wheel or mouseIMP so therefore it becomes unusable to me. Its currently my secondary browser

there are a few idiots/iceholes who ignore the fact that there are other browsers out there than IE...

other than that, I love the browser...

I have uninstalled AvantBrowser (sorry Jubba)... much quicker with Firebird...

Rev, I'll use firebird as soon as they fix those 3 things I mentioned. I liked the tabbed browsing thing, and the fastness. But I can't browse without my stuff like the mouse wheel and flash and the click and drag.

But I'm guessing that the next IE will have tabbed browsing and will be faster, so i'll prob. end up sticking with it :P.

But at least I've tried out about 3 extra browsers than IE. Just didn't like them.

I just don't understand...

my mouse wheel works... as a matter of fact, when you click a link with the center wheel, it opens in a new tab...

I can also select anything in the addy window...

hmmmm...

Ok, I'm using firebird right now, and here are the problems just on this page:

1). the reply box is about 1/2 the size it should be.

2). I can scroll with my mouse, but I can't hold in the scroll button and then go up and down.

3). I can't see the image you posted rev.

4). check message length messed up the reply box.

5). The reply box gets horizontal scroll bars instead of just forcing long words to split in half and go to next line.

6). I can't see footers.

So just cause you like this more doesn't make it better rev.

GO MR. GATES.

The only problem with mine is the reply box size man, Are you sure you're using version 0.6.1? You need the latest stable build most likely.

Question: Is firebird just a toned down Mozilla? Or is it just another browser to code for cross browser?

reverendflash
August 26th, 2003, 01:05 AM
it is mozilla. but only mozilla. no email. no aol schidt. no im schidt... just a mozilla browser that is easy to skin (so I'm told)...

I really haven't found much (other than a few egotistical portfolio sites, which if they want to exclude visitors, cool) that doesn't work just the same, or work faster than IE.

I like the way the tabs work in this version better than Avant, and Mozilla/NS7.

Yeah I just don't like having a billion browsers installed if I am not going to be using them all. If I like Firebird more I will uninstall mozilla since I very rarely every use either of them anyway (usually just for cross browser testing purposes or if my IE is acting up)

I installed it and used it for about a day, but it kept locking up my machine so I've gone back to Mozilla until they get a more stable build finished. The only part of Mozilla I use is the browser, so if they can get FireBird stable on all platforms then it sounds like just the ticket for me too.

Ive been using it for a bit and like it as well. It's a little bit buggy but most sites ive been to that it messed up were because their css does not validate.
http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator-uri.html

I'll keep using it.

Heaps of info in the forum. http://forums.mozillazine.org/index.php?c=4

Its not my scroll wheel, its a 3 button mouse w/o a wheel, but, like Nali's #2 holding down the middle button will give the arrow scrolling thingamajigger (as with many wheels), well in IE, but not mozilla. On top of that mouseIMP doesnt work which is what I always use to scroll so without that I just cant use it. (I dont like wheels that much anyway - their ok for small scrolling but anything greater than a page and theyre worthless)

ok sen i see what you mean now...

rev.

there are tabs? shesh i dont see em...can you show me where they are lol...i know i got them in mozilla but not here in FireBird.

edit: i am using the defalt skin, i got it late last night so didnt have much 'play' time with it :thumb:

edit: ok rev so i found out how to make a new tab and all, but here is my problem now...when i want it to open in a new tab it wont, i have to go to File|New Tab. which to me isnt that good of tabbing, unless there is a way to do that, thats one thing that i loved about avant. but i still love this  where did you get your skins? i know how to change them just not where to get them :thumb:

I love firebird, I have been using it almost since it came out. The only problems that I have with it are the java applets - I always try and download the update for it when I am directed to the page but it never gives me an option for mozilla or netscape, only IE - kind of a piss off really.

I love the tabbed browsing, my mouse scrolls just fine with it, the scroll button is great because when you click in on a link you get the new page opened in a new tab - very handy. It's so fast and takes up much less space.

I love it! IT's my default browser. I also like the control you have over the passwords and such.

mdipi
August 26th, 2003, 10:49 AM
when i click on a link it spawns a new window :scream: grr how can i make is so it opens a new tab instead? i would make it my defalut, i will acctually once i figure that out...

sure shot go to the netscape website and look for the plug in there, or go to the mozilla site and look for installing plug-ins. they have a whole bunch of links and what not.

You can press CTRL+T to open a new tab (or go to File/New Tab) or when clicking a link you can right click on it and choose "Open lin in new Tab"

mdipi
August 26th, 2003, 12:33 PM
ok thanks lost, so there is no way to just have it auto open in a new tab?

reverendflash
August 26th, 2003, 01:17 PM
just click with your center mouse wheel, or customize your toolbar, or use the center wheel to click on a tab...

many ways Mike...

I did that, and it installed the .dll file, but I still can't view flash footers, ads, etc.

mdipi
August 26th, 2003, 07:15 PM
Go to the netscape site and download the installer. when installing it choose firebird from the list of browsers.

if it doesnt show up choose ... or whatever and go to the firebird directory and work you way to the plug-ins folder, then install, thats what i had to do.

I ran the installer, pointed it to the %root%\mozillafirebird\plugins\ directory and it worked fine for me. I used the installer directly from Macromedia's site. Make sure to close your browser when you run the installer. That helps. =)

I did what Niann did, worked fine for me.

I unzipped the firebird .zip file into my program files directory, then downloaded the macromedia plug-in installer, chose "other" from the browser selection list, then I manually pointed it to the plugin folder of the firebird directory in my program files folder and hit "install". Worked like a charm.

does anyone else have a keyboard with open/close buttons? Mine used to work fine in Mozilla but they don't anymore. I'm trying out Opera again(SSSLLLLLLLOOOOOOWWW) and just trying out Avant. It looks pretty good so far and will probably take over Opera's spot as default. Anyone have any problems with avant?
