Hello all,
One of my little dreams is to launch a print magazine (kinda like what EthanM is doing). The magazine would be geared towards designers, and it would have Photoshop-Illustrator-Flash tips, Advertising Case studies, and designer related stuff, but also life articles, like music, movies, politics, etc.
I spent some time today just playing around, thinking what a cover would look like, and I came up with this. What do you guys think?
Here's the link: http://www.xxviii.net/lavaland/syntheticwhat.jpg
Thanks

try to increase the font's width - it's probably not at 100% in PS...
I'd change the font too and add some more extra pictures..

For a magazine geared towards designing, I would definitely play around with the typography and work with it more. Play around with the text a bit more, it looks so formal and boring the way it is now.

I printed a proof of the cover today, and it seriously looks entirely different from what I saw on screen, since you get a better sense of size and proportionality. I definitely need to make the title bigger - it's just too small, and I need to make the headlines smaller.
28 was helping me with comments as I was making this, and one of the things that we concluded was that the cover looked too much like a magazine cover (since I took some inspiration from magazines I had). I think a magazine like this should have be more subtle. However, I'm keeping the picture of the girl - that picture is awesome.
There's a group of us who are bouncing back and forth ideas for this, and we plan to launch an online magazine and community soon. Eventually we'd move it to print. If you're interested in helping us out and making a time commitment to this, pm me. I'm mostly looking for people who would help us develop content for it - such as interviews, etc.

it's just a shot in the dark cover. A print magazine probably won't happen for a year or two. And I got the site from sxc.hu - which is a free download, royalty free picture site. I can't get sued for using that picture

I can't lie, it's me. :)
Alright, no it isn't. :P
I'll post my thoughts later on the relevant board. :) Got a few other things to mention as well, so will do it all in one. :)

Yeah, and democrats will not win the whitehouse back. You should change that to...
DEMOCRATS ON CRACK
See them scramble like morons
around the southwestern states.

didn't mean to offend your non-hijacking nature morse, sorry for the sense of humor.
Anyway, I think the cover art is splendid, however, in my opinion, the typography is a little monotonous and the black area at the bottom is a bit too tall. Also, just for flare, you could add a yellow corner stripe with some sort of announcement like... "Babel is a an SAT word I learned last period - More on page 143"

haha. I thought what you said was funny. My boss was sitting next to me when I read the thread, and she thought it was pretty funny as well. Funny because it's sad. Sad because it's true :)
As I said before, I'm going to make a couple of changes to the cover, and then I'm going to start focusing on the online part.

yeah, I was just picking at you but it is kind of true about those few Texans. All in all, I think it's a cool concept for the cover but you'll need something that will really jump out at people if you're going to do it in print. it's kind of oppisite ends of the spectrum when dealing with print and web b/c with print, it's the cover that'll attract first timers, and with the web, it's the content (of course there is no literal cover), and vice versa, but either way, you're going to need a heck of a lot of stuff to fill up between the covers so you'll have a while to get the small stuff worked out.
