View Full Version : Urban Man's Lifestyle

Hello all,

I'm working on putting together a new site / community for the Metrosexual male. If you haven't heard this word before it's basically: a highly stylish, straight, urban male who embraces what is traditionally thought of as feminine. So he's straight but cares how he dresses and looks and isn't afraid of being feminine.

Areas of Interest

Grooming
Culture & Entertainment
Fitness & Health
Decor and Design
Food & Connoisseurship
Romance & Relationships
Fashion

So my question to you is: what questions do you have that you can't find answers for that pertain to the above.

Example:

I don't want to looks real femi, but how should I trim my eyebrows?

or

How to prepare a gourmet meal on a budget.

Help me get ideas of what men are interested in. Any and every comment is appreciated. And the 3-4 women on here let me here what you think men should know.

Cheers.

I think you covered it pretty well - for sure.

I heard this term like 3 days ago on televison and kind of laughed but the more I thought about it, the more it made sence. I know a lot of guys who fit this catagory and to be honest a few of these things really intrest me. Just look at Maxim Magazine, they have hair colouring and such now for guys - crazy.

I would say that Grooming (eye brows, pretty much all body hair), fitness - like weight loss. Too many mags say "gain muscle! Get huge!" when all a lot of guys want to do is loose some pounds and maybe tone up a bit. You could aslo have movie and music reviews of ALL types - not just action movies and the most popular music at the time.

Just some ideas I guess...

Pre-Marital Dating Rituals is nothing new, just went the way of Grunge for a few years while "man-bashing" was hip. Now with the advent of "Maxim, FHM" and "The Man Show", the pendulum has swung to the other end, and is swinging back toward normality.

Look @ John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever... he was a "Metrosexual."

But EthanM:
very hip to be doing right now. Good Luck, I look forward to reading your stuff!

DariusMonsef
August 20th, 2003, 05:34 PM
Kit,

I'd love to get waxed. Actually I would prefer to just laser it all off. Seriously, there is no use for body hair. Especially hair in your armpits and.... down there. All it does is breed sweat and bacteria.

Rev, Thanks for the thoughts. Men in general should be ready for the movement in pre-dating rituals. Now that women are becoming more of an equal to men in society, they now longer need them for support or provision.

Women now are providers and it no longer matters if you are a strong providing male. They provide for themselves so now they want the strong man, and they want a trophy. Women have always had the power over men in dating, now they are jsut flexing that muscle a little.

Whipper,

Yes it would be nice if they had more info on cover-up for men. I mean we get more break outs than women, but we have to go the whole day with this unsightly zit on our face. I actually have a nice litte cover-up stick from clinique that I use from time to time when I get a little bastid trying to camp on my face.

Pinx,

I know you are, and I will definately be covering body hair.

What a timely post. I used a "lip exfoliant" the other night that a girl friend of mine suggested. Had some trepidation about it at first, but wow, my lips were feelin' great afterwards!
Shaving all body hair below the chin is too time-consuming for guys, I don't know about everybody else but I roll out of bed at the last possible nanosecond, and my morning routine cannot take me more than 15 minutes. Plus, stubble sucks.
First heard about the term "metrosexual" on msn.com a few weeks ago, believe it or not. Classified myself as such in conversation with a couple colleagues shortly thereafter, and they looked at me kinda funny. Whatever though, cool guys have been taking care of themselves long before there was a term for it...

One question, yo- what exactly is going on in your footer there, Ethan?
:!:

oh, ok, I got it. top-down picture of a dude holding the top of his head. looked vaguely ****ographic for a sec...

DariusMonsef
August 21st, 2003, 08:21 PM
coreyem,

Yeah total body shaving is time consuming. I actually just trim with a hair trimmer one every other week or so.

Yeah my footer is a pic of me bent over on the ground holding my head. If you click it you see the whole picture.

I suppose it can be a little ****-erotic, ****ographic. I watched a special on TV the other day about the advertising trends that some major firms were taking by doing a lot of ****-erotic ads. Like the abercrombie ads.

It makes sense. The Gay / Lesbian buying power is 415 billion a year. And teen girls and gay men tend to want to look at the same thing. Ok I just learned that so thought I would share.

coreyem
August 21st, 2003, 08:35 PM
Those abercrombie ads are outta control homoerotic ! The irony lies in their target market- most of the dudes I know who wear Abercrombie and Fitch clothing are of the backwards hat, pickup-truck drivin', bud-light drinkin', top-40 dancin', homophobic sort, and you'd think they would be put off by Abercrombie's advertising. I guess they figure if they're playing football they're not gay :)

I don't think Abercrombie is shooting for a chunk of the gay market- most of the gay men I know have better taste than that...

In other news, I'd club a baby seal to get a nice leather blazer...

sigh...

Maybe they're marketing to the gay dudes that want to come off as the backwards hat, pickup-truck drivin', bud-light drinkin', top-40 dancin' type. :)

I've always thought of Abercrombie and Fitch as the standard college guy/girl clothing store, kinda figured that's the market they're going for. You know, that whole all-american thing. Banana republic markets to euro-wannabes such as myself, Gap to the corporate masses, etc. etc. You'll never hear a Limp Bizkit song in a Banana Republic, likewise you probably won't hear Sade in an Abercrombie store. Actually, I wouldn't know, I've never stepped foot in there.

I find the whole branding concept very interesting. People end up buying products because of the associations that advertising creates in their minds and not necessarily because of any actual merit in the product itself. Do I buy european cars because they're inherently better than American or Japanese cars? Partially, but mostly because I wouldn't be caught dead driving a Pontiac. Marketing/advertising is so interesting, even somebody like myself who doesn't watch TV is effectively marketed to and assigned a designated "consumer niche"...

BadMagick
August 22nd, 2003, 06:15 PM
I don't shop at Banana Republic, or A&F, or Express for men ... I hate places like that. Maybe it's just me, but I refuse to buy a t-shirt for $35 ... Not in a million years.

The problem is people are so caught up in trends, and what people are forced to see as sexy by ads, and just this huge mind game these clothing stores play. I refuse to buy into it.

I think my way of being is best stated in Good Charlotte's The Anthem...
I'm gonna get by and just do my time
Outta step while they all get in line

I don't think you need to wear designer clothes to be sexy. I do my own thing in the face of everything, and people respect me for that. Girls and guys all the same, if nothing else, respect me, and that's really all I'm looking for.

badmagick,

I agree that spending soo much on clothes is hard to do, but I have a $120 pair of guess jeans. Not because they are trendy, but because my arse looks great in them. Guess in my opinion has the most comfortable jeans.

coreyem
August 22nd, 2003, 07:17 PM
Never underestimate the value of a good-lookin butt.

Just think of it this way: Go out drinkin' 3 nights and end up with a hangover, or go buy some nice jeans and get lucky the next time you go out drinkin'? No contest.

I'm a firm believer that you don't have to spend lots of money to look good, but I don't really have the time or desire to scour 2 thrift shops and the Macy's sale just to come away with a great pair of pants...

check www.bluefly.com, they've got fantastic deals on serious designer wear, I just bought some Prada sunglasses there for 65% off retail...

Kitiara
August 22nd, 2003, 07:19 PM
I know I'm not a man (no **** Sherlock), but I spend a lot on clothes. That doesn' mean to say a buy a lot of them, but what I do buy I'll pay extra for to get stuff that lasts and looks good...

I'm not bothered about labels or designers, I'm more concerned about what actually suits me, and what fits because I'm an awkward size.

Where do you live? In my area thats the general type that stay away from Abercrombie and Fitch. Just les femme achete les vettemans du Abercrombie et fitch. I get everything I wear from Randy River and Sport Check.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I wouldn't call my self a metrosexual, while i do care if I look like crap, as long as what I am wearing is comfortable and suits me, and my hair has a handful of jel in it, I'm good. Entertainment and culture-wise, I am into the music end of things, and can play guitar and am getting pretty **** good at trumpet, but aside from that I spend to much time on the computer to watch TV (except for MXC and Family Guy - greatest shows in the world as far as I know. When they come on I drop everything and run.) and learn gossip items. Fitness and health: I just try to keep active enough to not become a lard ***- soccer twice a week and gym class during school year. Decor and design: Does web design count? because I am definately into that. except for that, no decor and design aren't for me. *BODY wax and eyebrow plucking are out by the way - and will never spend over $40 on a tshirt unless it looks really **** cool*

But on the other hand, I would like to learn to cook since, well, I can't. And I would like a girlfriend. Definately.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had no clue what metrosexual ment when I first heard it. To be honest I thought it had to do with a sex on trains - thanks for the enlightenment!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, I think my novel is done...
