This is really cool. I've been trying to find some info on this for some time. Does anyone know how this works?

That's flash, not javascript. I'm not sure if you need to purchase Flash or Flex to make something like that, but you'll definitely have to learn ActionScript 3. If you don't want the trouble, you might be able to find a site that will let you generate something like that for your site, but it won't be nearly as customizable as doing it yourself.
