My first entry in the FXpression 09 (http://www.kirupa.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=151) competition can be seen here:

http://blog.organa.ca/flashContent/contest/comet.html

The swf relies on an audio file so my attachment would be too big to fit on the forum.
You can download the swf and audio file here though:

Hopefully I'll have my second entry up soon.

Just a quick note. I used the Box2d Library for this project so this might invalidate my entry... if that's the case I'll have to put all hope in my second entry!

I get a security warning.

Damnit,
I thought I was detecting that error...

Saxx, try making sure you don't have other Flash windows up. I'm using the Sound Spectrum analyzer and it doesn't like to share with other flash apps. Close any YouTube windows you have up and try again please.

Unfortunately, your entry doesn't qualify because you are using box2d :(

Really cool entry though!

Kirupa,

Any chance you could change your mind about this entry being disqualified?

I've just re-read the official rules (http://www.kirupa.com/contests/index.htm) and nowhere does it say: "Don't use external libraries".

I only suspected I might be in trouble after finishing the entry, when I read the guidelines thread.

It doesn't seem fair that I've been disqualified over a rule that isn't actually in the rules.
The situation sort of reminds me of 'The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' where the Earth was destroyed because no one bothered to check the bulletin board on another planet.

Thanks,

Enebreus

I thought it was kind of inherent in a programming competition. If he would allow external libraries, the contests could become jigsaw puzzle contests where the person who could find the best open source libraries, and piece them together properly could beat someone who made something completely from scratch.

Even if you throw that argument aside, you are still dealing with external input. The correlation with sound makes your entry really cool, but, what then would prevent me from doing a n-body simulation in C on a server farm, rendering a video, reading that data into flash, and plotting each pixel as a circle? lol.

The original constitution is the base of our government, but the amendments are critical too :D

ps: can you post your code? and btw... i like what you did with your swarming code :)

I appreciate where you're coming from.

When I interpreted the rules/intent of the competition I didn't see anything wrong with using Box2D.

I think I made something awesome no matter what happens. I'm happy with the final product and everything I've learned making it. I'd just hate to see it disqualified because someone assumed I'd know not to use external libraries or external audio.

You can grab the earlier version of the Swarming code from my blog here:

I share the code for most of my projects so feel free to browse around.

In order to share the current version I'd have to do a lot of cleaning up... for example I wrote 5 different ways of handling broad level hit detection. At this point I would have to rewrite it to make it sharable.

Unfortunately, like freeskier said, using external libraries isn't allowed. The rules aren't necessarily all encompassing, but this was a question that was asked before: http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2422799&postcount=26

Your entry is really cool, and I am sure nobody doubts that. It is just for a competetion about programming, it is assumed that all code is your own :P
