Hi,
long time no see!

I've been asked to do some research as to the easiest way to do implement a search-field that searches an archive of pdf's. The thing is that we need to, in some way, tag these pdf's, and the search is to search the tags. The site is probably going to be powered by Joomla, if we can get our system guys to agree to it. I know it's not the safest CMS out there, so we have to be able to update it whenever there's a new security fix, but that's a different problem! I'm also considering Wordpress, but I think Joomla is more flexible and powerful, please correct me if I'm wrong.

So, I got a few questions about this, hopefully someone can answer them, or point me in the right direction.

How do I tag pdf's?
Can you add them inside the pdf itself, like some sort of meta tags?
If so, how? And is there a way to specify (filter?) a search to this information?

I know these are big questions, but I don't have Joomla on my machine or a version I can play around with. Also I'm so swamped with work that I sadly don't have the time to poke around. I don't know that much about Joomla, we use our own CMS at work, and it's amazing how quickly you forget everything you know.

If someone have a good resource site or something that I can read up on it would be great.

I hope some of this makes sense :beard:

Umm php lets you read the contents of a pdf. I am not sure about how to do this, but I am sure some google searching will help you.

Also I know with some file system functions of php it will let you read the meta data of a file, I am guessing if the file system supports some sort of tagging that you would be able to read these tags.

You may also want to consider hiring a 3rd party contractor to develop a Joomla plugin for your pdf searching(Maybe me?).

ok, I'll look into it, thanks!

I don't think bringing in a third part will be an option, but we'll see how things progress ;)

I'll have your name on the top of my list!
