View Full Version : New puter threat?

OK, so this totally scary thing has been sweeping over computerland.
Random reboots, and a lot of it.
It first happened to me a while back when i was in boston. i posted a thread here, and you guys gave me some advise and i tried a few things. i thought the problem fixed itself, but turns out, it happened to me again like last week twice.
when mine does it, it says windows is shutting down, blah blah, and then shuts itsself down.
now, i was on dsl there, now i am in NJ and on dialup.

a week ago my mother's puter on the same connection started doing it. but unlike mine, hers happens almost every time she is on, and repeatedly.

so i sat here, trying to think of common elements between the two. they have both been scanned for virii and trojans and spyware with an assortment of programs. they are both relatively new. they are not overheating, nor are they broken. the only common thing is the keyboard. i figured perhaps the keyboard was shorting somewhere and sending a shutdown signal. so i disabled the keyboard's sleep and shutdown commands. still happens. this leads me to believe one of two things.
A. it is the power supply, and Dell puters have a safety where if the voltage fluxuates too greatly or we have a 'brown out' the puter will shut off so the HD doesnt fry.
B. it is some hardcore virus, trojan, worm, parasite, or other bad thing that no one has 'discovered' yet.

another friend of mine has that happen to his puter, who is on a dell.

now i was on IRC and it happend to some1 else, who is on a dell. it happens to some1 else too on there who has a dell.

wtf. does anyone else have ANYTHING to contribute to this.

i know my dell has a safety thing that guards against brown outs and such, but i have never had that happen to me. my computer is relatively new (like 4 months) so i don't know.

<kirupa> right click on my computer and select Properties
<redgolgi> http://www.kirupaforum.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31408
<kirupa> select Advanced
<redgolgi> woopsies
<kirupa> press Settings under Startup and Recovery
<kirupa> in the section marked System Failure
<kirupa> uncheck Automatically Restart
<[brainy]> kirupa, its just an RPC exploit.
<[brainy]> ah
<[brainy]> interesting :)
<sushis> sweet
<kirupa> that may work
<sushis> that should do it
<kirupa> that worked for me a while ago
<kirupa> it could also be a power supply issue - in which case that won't work :)

Hmmm thats odd.

I have a brand new Dimension 8250 at work that is stocked to the gills with goodies. the only problem I find with it is it dumps its memory at least twice a week.

lol, i don't know about red, but sushis you just asked for it. DL'ing a .exe off kazaa is just BEGGING to get a virus. Only thing I could tell you is to try reformatting comp.

Oki peeps, my puter just booted on it's own, It's never done so before, and it can't be a coincidence that it does it when I'm reading this stuff

also, upon startup, icq started to auto-install some weird plugin pack...

Hi Gina :)

Try scanning your PC with Spybot and Adaware:

I Don't know what your all are talking about i Have a Gateway and i never had any problems. computers only go bad when the person who is using them are doing bad things. like my cosines computer i have to reformat Evey week almost:sleep: because he keeps "somehow" deleting his windows files but then he has windows ME which sucks.:a:

Hey I didn't mean to Offend you this is just what I think is true people that use there computers to type up papers and do Little stuff never have problems with the computers it is all on how you use them and who uses them. I never had any problems with gateway and i have been using them for over 5 years they have always work for me. I have been on dells and other computers and they seem to work just as good compared to gateway computers. so don't think I'm putting down any other manufactures of any kind.

To err is human. To really foul things up requires a computer.
