hi I just want to suggest maybe adding a new section to the forum, called 'useful sites' or something.. people scour the web all the time, and sometimes a great site is found that would never have been discovered by most people. That link could be posted in the new section along with others. It could also be broken down into three categories of sites with tutorials, flash experiments and those with excellent designs. Just a suggestion, let me know what you guys think...

peace,

I think it's a great idea, altho there's a site of the week section and tutorials from kirupa itself, Like if i want to find something i 'd start a thread and not look for it or search on the forum, useless spamming(look who's talkin:p ehhe) but yea i agree, it's a great idea, easy to impliment:-s dunno...

There used to be a section called "Cool Sites" in the forums, but that was simply spammed to death with people posting their own sites, etc. If we were to categorize, many people will post their sites in the wrong category. The current group of stickies works feel for now me thinks :P

That sounds like a good idea! :cyclops: What shall that section be called? Cool sites sounds kinda...dull. Even cool spelled with a 'k' as in Kool is pretty strange as well.

I think it would be hilarious to put certain sites in there. People could PM you with weird sites they find, you could filter them, and put up the ones w/o taste... and nudity, etc.

whatcha think Kman?

- Inspiration Station

...Sounds like somewhere along the reading rainbow.

I think maybe:
Out of the 4 Billion Web Sites That Exist, We Managed To Find A Few That Don't Actually Suck... That might be a little long.

I like the idea of having a place where we can submit sites that Phil can review and approve or send the the fiery pits of hell.

Maybe: Phil at the Gates

kirupa
August 10th, 2003, 04:02 PM
Yeah rev - users can submit a site to any one of us, and we can create a new thread with one site mentioned in each thread :)

I was thinking more along the line of a column, done in the forum, so Phil could update it. Phil/any mod would be the only one who could post in there (locked threads), and the topics would be discussed (if at all) in random.

This could be a great way to get weird, out of the way topics, found by members, into a place which is easily accessed and without the possibility of spam. When a topic gets a good discussion going, the thread could be linked from Phil's column...

It would require no time whatsoever on your part, and would be very interesting. I know I see people all the time asking Phil for links. Here we would have those links, with a little explaination from Phil/other mods if they want, easy to find, easy to get a quick summary...

I really think this could be a fun and interesting portion of your site.

Sounds like a good idea rev. I modified the original rules before I read your thread with a similar idea. Basically, there is a thread in Random where any cool sites can be included. Any of us mods can add that site to the forum, and regular members will not be allowed to create new threads in that forum. The only deviation I took is that I allow members to reply to threads. If you think that would not be necessary, I can disable that.

I just think that having members reply in a thread that already exists for a site will help the discussion be more organized... instead of a "wow cool" comment in a 10 page thread with none of us knowing for which site that comment was directed toward :)

Cheers!
Kirupa :b:

reverendflash
August 10th, 2003, 05:57 PM
the only reason I was saying to not allow responses, was so the topic site will not get hijacked, or spammed...

then, when someone wants to discuss a thread in there, they simply link to it from random...

Revhttp://www.aulman.com/rev.gif

kirupa
August 10th, 2003, 05:59 PM
ok - sounds good. I'll just move the 2A and BB threads from that forum back into Random then :) There is absolutely no spam in the 2A thread....absolutely none haha.

reverendflash
August 10th, 2003, 06:06 PM
these sites don't have to be developer based do they?

I mean if I find a site on frogs growing inside rocks, hypathetically, http://userpages.umbc.edu/~tmccau1/images/smilies/suspicious.gif then could I post it in cool sites?

Revhttp://www.aulman.com/rev.gif

kirupa
August 10th, 2003, 06:11 PM
Sure - as long as it has some value to the users visiting. It can be really well designed, it can have some really interesting information, etc. :eye:

reverendflash
August 10th, 2003, 06:12 PM
cool!

sometimes I find a site that is very cool, but really has nothing to do with much of anything...

anyway thanks!

this sounds like fun

I'm just wondering why us reg members can't post in it. Assuming there is strict modding of the forum, it'd be a lot easier to see what people have to say about the site w/o having to open another browser to go to random. Plus we'll probably still be on page 1 of the sites forum while the thread about that site is on page 200 of random. All you'd need to do is just make sure all the posts are useful (-50 post count for anybody who spams that forum).

kirupa
August 10th, 2003, 06:15 PM
Actually, that's a good idea. Rev - how about we simply do not count post counts in that forum? Because as more sites get added to that forum, they will ultimately fall toward the bottom with users having no way of judging which sites generating the most number of comments.

EDIT: Maybe if we find members spamming or using that area as a chat room, we can mercilessly delete those threads like a raving (rave's aren't only for people trying to be cool after all :)) lion attacking a wildebeest.

reverendflash
August 10th, 2003, 06:17 PM
then you have to draw a line as to what is useful, etc.

this will stop all arguments before they start.

it will also make it so we don't have to strictly mod a new section.

I assume that usually after posting a site, a thread in random will be opened immediately thereafter. That thread will be linked from the one in cool sites.

Revhttp://www.aulman.com/rev.gif

reverendflash
August 10th, 2003, 06:19 PM
I don't think that post counts make a difference any more. I think that threads will get hijacked, and after 1 page, no one will read what the thread was about in the first place.

JMO tho.

Revhttp://www.aulman.com/rev.gif

I also think we are as agressive as we can be, and still keep the fun factor up

NaliWarCow
August 10th, 2003, 06:19 PM
ok, i understand what you mean rev. You've had your share of arguments with members in the past week :P.

ok - as any new threads about a site appears in Random, any of us can edit that appropriate thread in the UC forum with the link to the thread in Random ;)

reverendflash
August 10th, 2003, 06:23 PM
sounds cool to me...

if it doesn't work out, we can always change it...

some of the cool sites will submitted will prob be more suited to their category, some won't...

wow, I'm glad you guys have taken to the suggestion. You all have some great ideas too.. some of the names you guys came up with are awesome..
i'll put another one foward: 'Needle in a haystack of needles in a web of haystacks'
a little long i guess :smirk: but to the point, hehe..

either way, based on all your input, here's how it could layout:

- site remarks (user forum for discussion on specific sites & posting of new sites)

-below would be administrator controlled-
- tutorial sites (sites that offer tutorials & lessons)
- experimental sites (sites on the edge of flash functionality)
- design sites (sites using flash and/or with excellent design or design as a theme)

another section, although its getting big here, would be a forum for links to jobpages and freelance markets for graphic designers.. hey, i mean we all need work (some of us anyway :sure: ) and we can help each other out if we find a good job site or have a job that we can't take, to pass it on.

My main idea was based around the fact that there are tons and tons of great sites and new flash stuff and it would be impossible to comb through it all yourself, but with the amount of people here, if we trade our bookmarks like baseball cards, I'd say we'd end up with a pretty inspirational collection.

whadya say? ;)

oh, one more idea: funny sites.. sites that use flash to make us laugh our *** off... like www.ebaumsworld.com/

although i realize humor is pretty subjective..
