Go have a look at this article...

http://www.cnn.com/2003/TRAVEL/08/06/distracted.driving.ap/index.html

It's pretty interesting to see that only 30% of the people on the road use Cell Phones, when I'm driving to work - it feels more like 95%!

if that info is based on a survey, then most ppl lie...

it IS around the 90%'ish... I don't like driving with someone who talks on a phone while actually driving...

actually eilsoe, it was cameras placed inside the vehicles, then a panel said what was a distraction...

I agree, most people are messing with the radio while driving. Although, I must say, if it weren't the radio, they would be putting on their makeup, talking to their children, reading a book... American drivers think that the road is their living room, and they should be entertained while driving.

another reason I don't drive unless I have to anymore.

I totally hate it when people talk and drive at the same time, ive seen many wrecks caused by them.
One time my mom was talking on the phone AND writing something down at the same time, so i grabbed her phone and turned it off cuase she almost wrecked once.... it was scary :(

my sister always changes cds when driving. she looks for cds in her little storage place and then changes one after another, all while swearing at other drivers on the road and at the cds because none of them are labeled. it gets scary sometimes...

I've actually seen people read the newspaper while driving... reading a book, shaving with soap and a razor...

people need to realize they are in control of 3000 lbs. of mass, and the relation inirtia has on that mass...

I have to admit that I talk on my phone, change stations, adjust bass level, eat, drink my coffee, look for cd's

I have never gotten into an accident for doing any of the above mentioned items. When I use the phone its to make quick plans or so say "dude I will be there in a few"

It would be more dangerous if I did not drink my morning coffee on the way to work and if I did. I would fall back to sleep and wreck.

I have also done that.

however, I also understand the theory of the numbers, and I am over 28 yrs of age (the avg age of when males realize they are mortal)...

there are times and places for the stuff - and people who can handle it and people who cant.

I know personally - I have been distracted while driving and talking to someone in the car... It happend once. I got real scared and now I dont ever look at the person I am talking to.

I will talk on my cell phone for long periods of time - but only if there are very few cars on the road or I am on the 401. I dont know how people can do it in the city and such - there are just too many things to watchout for.

As for eating and drinking - almost never. I might drink some soda or something, but that's it. I never eat because I am just too paranoid :)

Hm, I have to admit I'm a cellphone driver as well. However, since my stereo got ganked, I haven't had a radio to adjust! I'll share a little collision research with myself as the subject:

Accident #1: Clipped someone's bumper while checking out a very, very hot girl walking down the street
Accident #2: Rear-ended a minivan I was following who stopped suddenly for another car I couldn't see
Accident #3: Tossed back a full snifter of brandy, walked out the door and wrapped my car around a tree.

I am happy to say that I was neither adjusting the radio nor talking on a cellphone in any of these accidents! Don't know if that means anything or not, I've never considered talking on the cellphone a CPU-intensive enough task to affect the performance of my driving thread.

Nope, I left the scene of the accident, which was conveniently about 200 feet from my front door, stumbled into the house and passed out on the couch. The cops towed my car, and it was a total nightmare to get it out of the towing yard, cost me like 500 bucks. yikes!

its better than the 3K it would have cost your for the DUI and the 90 + days of suspended liscence you would have had.

Yup. I got a DUI about a year after that. Expensive. Time-consuming. Not recommended.

I take cabs/have friends drive now if I'm going to get drunk at a bar. Nothing like a little jail time to turn you into a responsible citizen, talk about Pavlov's dog...
