NS isnt dead, there are a lot of people working on netscape. the 50 layoffs are just a reflection of the economy and how NS really doesnt have the position in the market any more to maintain the number of people they had working on it.
Besides, Mozilla is going strong and should NS die, that would kind of be considered its replacement (if not already considered to be so).

I no longer test any of the pages of the site in Netscape, but I do like Mozilla. It's a combination of a good product gone bad, a bad merger between AOL/TW, and the downturn in the hi-tech industry.
Mozilla is really a nifty program. It doesn't include the annoyances of AOL icons and mysteriously appearing Netscape shortcuts everywhere that Netscape 7.1 or whatever the latest version sports ;)

netscapes gone? thats good news for me! finnaly the schools will use IE, making doing stuff easier(canadian school computers are pretty restrictive)
I hold a grudge against netscape because it reminds me of school.

The one thing I liked about Netscape is the tab bars, and thats about it. Bad sides include processor sucking, addon crap, too much AOL involvement.

Netscape was junk. Still is. So yay I guess. :)

Netscape rocked for its time, but it failed to realize what it took to run a high-tech company. Instead of developing their browser to include DHTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other cool features that IE was including, Netscape simply complained and whined to the courts about it.
In the end, Netscape may have won legal suits, but people had long switched over to the better features of Internet Explorer. MS is great at giving people what they want, something which netscape failed to do.
Cheers!

without Netscape, we wouldn't even be able to have rollover graphics on web pages! Netscape invented JavaScript.
Mozilla is the engine Netscape runs on. Therefore, Mozilla browser is Netscape without the AOL involvement.
I think if you tried Mozilla, you would find that the Processor load is less than IE...
to that end, I use Avant Browser which runs on the IE engine, but I test in Mozilla just to make sure it works.

actually, Netscape started DHTML, but IE added a whole slew of items that Netscape didn't support, and included it with every system sold, so it became the norm. Similar to the way the SONY Betamax was a better format, but not nearly as popular.
I think you guys need to take a history course on Web Browsers...

LOL
abzoid remembers quite well about coding HTML for Netscape 2.0.
Personally, I learned HTML and JavaScript in during Netscape 3.x. IE was the up and comer, looked upon as an also-ran, but why change when Netscape does everything you need.
BTW - I'm not bashing IE... I use it every day, and it has made it easier to code for, whether that is good or not...
Just that Netscape deserves some respect, and shouldn't be bashed just because someone hasn't learned on that browser. Since Mac OSX isn't getting IE, it won't be long before we start coding for Safari as well...
Complain all you want, they aren't going away, I doubt there will ever be just one standard...

OH sweet day!!
Can we have a viking funeral for NS? I'll bring the beer and we'll all camp out on the sand and watch that sucker burn!
I hate coding for NS. Actually I don't, because I no longer do. If it's broken in NS just open IE.

so you just ignore the <i>millions</i> of visitors to your client's sites?
that is like a mechanic who only uses standard wrenches, even though the cars he works on have metric bolts and nuts as well. It'll only shear off the edges, making the nut round, but what the hell, I only need that bolt loosened once, right?

Can't get around windows. Damm monopoly. Netscape seems ok. It LOOKS pretty, but it was a lot faster before AOL's involvment. Why is it AOL software clogs up your processor? It all sucks! I use Avant browser now, which is great!
As for windows....
well i used to hate windows and be envious of mac users. But since getting winxp i LOVE windows. I would still prefere to be on a mac, but winxp has made things so easy for me work. I think it is great.

Linux, MACOSX, Etc... You dont have to use Windows, there are plenty of other OS's around, some of which are free. =)
Cheers!

Personally, I would use Linux over windows or a mac anyday. but nearly none of the programs I want to run work on linux. I like linux (unix too) because its very stable. especially compared to - say - windows.
BLUE SCREEN!
As for browsers, I think i will stick with IE because its only about 10% crap as far as I'm concered. Its simple, you have your baisc controls (forward, back, stop refresh, home) You have your favourites and preferences, and you have a print button. There are a few other things such as View=>source that are handy but not often used.
but on the crap side, it has microsofts patented: "we'll give you what you need, and some b*llsh*t you dont" so you can check your mail and view stuff offline, and it has that useless discuss button.
Netscapes earlier versions were like that, but there was something about them that I didn't quite like. I don't know what, but it was there, and that my dislike of macs stemed from there. I still hold the grudge.

I don't care if Netscape dies as long as Mozilla is still around. I like Moz because I think it suppresses annoying popups and unwelcome javascript bells and whistles better than IE. Opera is also great - but it's not free unless you don't mind the banner ad. I still don't understand what's so great about IE.

I hope NS passes silently.
