View Full Version : Visitor messages

Any chance that we can permanently delete visitor messages from our profiles? I've had requests for AS help posted in mine (rather than sending a private message or posting their question on the forum) but unfortunately I can't delete them entirely because the only option I'm given is to perform a "soft" deletion. Consequently I'm left with a list of "this message has been deleted" entries.

No rush though, as it's not an overly important issue.

In a similar vein, where's the About Me tab referred to in the FAQs?
"The public profile lists information about the member under the 'About Me' tab."

I don't think that it shows up in all browsers:

Correct...I don't get any tabs with IE7 but the other entries (stats, friends, groups, etc) appear on the right. There's no About Me box though and I'm pretty sure there used to be an About Me link before the upgrade.

you use IE ... you've been sniffing penguins

(that came out wrong)

Me and 77% (http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2008/August/browser.php)of all other users, yes....which is roughly 1,126,996,918 (http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2008/August/browser.php) people.

You know, this whole anti-IE thing gets tiresome particularly as using the world's most popular browser isn't yet a crime. Nor is it actually helping me to delete visitor messages.

Deleted them for you. I was given the choice to soft delete or physically remove. Do you not have that option? (In any browser)?

Only soft delete last time I looked....but feel free to post a new visitor message so I can test it again :)

No joy...only the soft option for me, I'm afraid....in IE or FF

Hmmmm, weird. Well, if you get a pile of them again let me know and I'll take care of it for you. My fees are competitive. ;)

And there's me thinking you were cheap!!!

Thanks all the same though...and yes, it is a tad weird. Something for Kirupa to investigate perhaps.

I think its just a function of the new vb. Lots of added bells and whistles in this version but not a lot you can do with it! :P

Hmm, I'll look into it :)

As you can tell, I never look at my visitor comments! Also, does this occur on all of the styles?

I'm using the default style only...and IE, as mentioned above.

The About Me section used to be visible before the latest vB upgrade although the tab is indeed visible in FF. Visitor messages are obviously a new feature but it seems strange that some get the option to delete them permanently while others (i.e. me) don't, regardless of which browser I'm using. I've had a look at my other settings to see if there's anything obvious in there that might be causing a conflict but there's no outstanding candidates. I even tried it without the invisible mode activated in case that was the culprit and it didn't make any difference.

Another strange thing is that I always seem to be limited now to 6 pages of search results no matter what option I select to "find posts from" - another slight annoyance if I'm looking for that perfect example of code I posted for someone more than a few months ago!

Thanks.

I have been limited to 150 search results for as long as I can remember. I think that that's intentional so that you don't hog too much server time (sometimes it takes ~10 seconds to complete a search), although I'm not sure that limiting every search to 150 results is the best way to avoid server hogging. Usually I just refine my search terms until I find it, use Google, or give up. I'm sure you do something similar, but I don't think that Kirupa can/will correct every slight annoyance.

That last one is not a big issue...it's just something that I've noticed. I distinctly remember getting search results going back to about 2004 but if it's been changed, c'est la vie.

Unfortunately, refining a search isn't that practical because it doesn't pick up any code within AS tags. So, while I usually have a good idea what code I'm searching for, the search depends on me remembering the vague expressions the original poster used to explain their question/problem. Which, as you know, can vary wildly.

Regarding the second issue where the tabs are missing in IE on the Visitors pages, can you try again on the default kirupa.com style and see if it fixes it? If it does, then I'll port the change to the other styles.

I tested on my IE7 install, and things displayed properly :)

I see tabs!

Thanks

Great - fixed it for all of the styles as well :)

Also, I modified the permissions to allow you to delete messages from your visitor profile. Let me know if it works!

Yes! I always have that problem!

The search is a trickier issue to solve. I'll see what I can do though.

Still only getting the soft delete option

Just an update...I decided to bite the bullet and uncheck the option allowing visitor messages.
