I couldn't find an answer to this question in a search. But is 3DS Max 2009 backwards compatible with let's say 3DS Max 9?

You could load older projects with Max 2009, but I doubt vice-versa.

3dsm as we all know is made by Autodesk who is all about their money. They make you keep a subscription which is $400.00 a license per year (in my area anyway) in order to upgrade the software. One of the ways in which they get you to subscribe is that nothing is backwards compatible........ $400.00 might not seem bad but when your running Revit, Autocad and 3dsm on 5 workstations for a small architectural drafting firm thats about 6k a year... ouch

Autodesk certainly is hungry for money but fortunately people script the hell out of maya/max
at school the 3ds people use a plug/script by Bobo (B.Petrov) but I'm a Maya man myself so I don't know more about it. Maybe the google does =)
