Ok, so I've decided to try recreating various veggies and whatnot... Basically just to get into creating materials and get into basic modeling a bit more.

Here's attempt numero uno, a tomato.

(I'm submitting all finished works to cgsphere.com, so if you guys wanna gimme a vote/comment, please do  )

The water looks not real. And the curvy things at the top are 2 curvy, besides that I want to eat it.

That's looking fantastic. Care to throw a wire up so we can see the detail? I think the balance is a bit too much off centre- though I can see it looks like you are using that to show the detail of the top of the tomato yeah? hmm, I think if you can find something to allow it to tilt, you'll have a solid grounding of weight and it would add something great to the composition!

looks good as tomato wise however not all tomatoes have a plum bottom that tapers[central one], but then again it's up to personal taste

but I like it!

however I would like to see at least the blurred reflection of the striped tile, since it is black it should show up on the red surface at least a little

what program is this?

yeah pretty great :)

the actual skin material is really nice, i don't think i can fault it at all.
I agree that the water is a bit off, i think maybe it's TOO rounded? not sure exactly but it feels like the drops are too bulbous, though i know water can form like that. But i suspect on a tomato it's usually a bit different because the surface is so smooth.

EDIT: ok well i just tried it on a real tomato, and i think we're both kind of right. The small droplets are quite round, but as they get bigger and the surface tension can't support more, they are a lot flatter (or they just roll down and off).

But seriously terrific overall.

Woah, very realistic. I think the fanciest touch is the skin. It looks just right.

Thanks for the comments guys :)

DM: I've added a wire shot in the top post. And yes, the thing is tiltet. And yes, it was purely to show more of the top part. It may look a bit odd maybe, but it doesn't bother my eyes at all.'

wes: I had a good look around getty, istock and google, and many tomatoes have that shape. It's also how I picture a tomato in my head, I thought the regular kind in the stores looked a tad TOO plain.

Pie: The water droplets were a last minute thing. It's only a pFlow system sprouting spheres with a clean refract material all over the tomato model. It's not 100% real I know, but it does give the overall image an extra touch of realism.

hl: Thanks  I focused mainly on creating the skin. I even started analyzing tomatoes when me and the lady went shopping this past monday :D. Those tiny yellowish spots you see on the tomato was an extra touch I found out about then :) Also, if you look closely at the smaller left tomato, you can see a mildly greasy fingerprint on the skin of the model.

swell.

I've been rendering coke bottles for school last semester and the water droplets have been a real headcase, I don't know how 3ds/pflow handles it, but it was a pain in maya.

good work, I haven't seen cgspheres for a while, gonna pop there soon

Actually, pFlow only distributed basic spheres randomly around the model, everything else was up to VRay. I only spent 5 minutes on it.

I have an idea for making more realistic droplets, but I haven't got time to test it through.

that looks fantastic! very edible :D

i think the droplets are, as mentioned, too perfectly spherical. squashing/stretching em a bit might help?

This is pretty amazing, i couldn't believe that it was completely computer generated

It looks amazing but I think some of those drops defy gravity. Some on the left side look weird too. Overall, I've got all of my thumbs up.
