Wasn't the biggest fan of the first one when I saw it back in the day. Watched it again and I could appreciate the funny sequences of dialog and what not. The new one however had Del Toro written all over it (thankfully) and it has the same charisma as the first. I wouldn't say you need to see it in theaters, but it's worth the money if you liked the first.

Little cheesy at parts but enjoyable. I really enjoyed the first one, and this one is just as good.
CGI was really nice (and there was a TON of it).

I really liked the first one, however, I thought this one was a bit of a disapointment. I thought the overall look to the movie was great (cg, etc). The action scenes were good but I thought there could have been more or had made them longer because at times I found it a little slow. My biggest complaint was that at the end the plot didn't even make sense:
Why did they even need to go back to fight the elf guy after the demon lady pulled the spear from Hellboy?
The elf girl's life was never in danger because of the link between her and the elf guy so there was no point in Abe giving the last piece of the crown to save her.
And why at the end did they all quit like they were pissed off? Rasputin especially, he had no reason to be mad.
Dispite that I'd say its probably still worth renting as the last fight scene and the one in the market are really good. Probably not worth seeing in the theater though.
