Jasper iReport

ok so we're moving our reporting "platform" over to jasper, and its my responsibility to handle the look and feel of our certificates,

but, this iReport thing is new to me, i don't even know how to add background images
and how come my 8.5x11 portrait document looks squished and doesn't have the right proportions and size?

Can anyone offer up some gooooood iReport tutorials? I can't find any... its like, a wasteland:asleep:
