Have you tried cel shading it rather than using gradient fills? :) Get even more of a manga look that way... :)

cell shading is where you use blocks of colour to shade instead of gradients... it's what is used in most cartooning and stuff, because it would take ages (and be almost impossible) to shade using gradients that looked natural as the char moves.

a well-known example is the simpsons... most of the colour is just flat, and darker/lighter patches are used to show the shadows and highlights :)

Yeah, what he said. :)

I'll draw a quick eye during my lunch break and post it, to show the kind of thing I mean. :)

OK, now this is very quickly done, so excuse the shoddy workmanship, but this is kind of what I mean by cel shading. There's no gradients there at all, just blocks of flat colour.

not really, but it's "tv-series"-kinda ;P

kit's eye is still that kinda style, but it is a bit more tv-ish maybe. You still see that kinda style in manga though, because the artists have their own styles

however, what she was emphasising was the cell-shading as opposed to the use of gradients... the eye itself wasn't meant to be the focus.

Yeah, every manga artist has their own style and the eye that I drew was done in mine. But as ILike Pie stated, it was meant to be a demonstration of cel shading rather than manga drawing. :) But in the end it is all down toyour own individual style. :)

I guess I'm just not a big fan of using gradients. I kinda feel like it's cheating, which is why I prefer to colour, shade and highlight all by hand instead of using the gradient tools.

I admit that it would probably look a lot better and be a lot easier to do metallic surfaces if I did use gradients, but I can't bring myself to do it. :)
