I've been getting bored with my current site (surprise surprise), and am planning a Flash / PHP more interactive version for the near future...

Just ideas in Photoshop at the moment, but here's a little sneaky preview. :)

Well, it's my current favourite, anyway. No doubt it'll all change...

It's a clock that tells the time in binary. :beam:

I saw a proper LED one on ThinkGeek.com to put on your desk, and I liked it, so I've made a Flash version. :)

Thanks. :)

I've kept a similar colour scheme to the current site, just made it a bit more... well, as Soul said, 'sexeh'. :)

Oh and Kit, you're shoutbox humour is poor :P

Kitiara

I know it is. Can I plead writer's block? ;)

OK, the clock. :)

You guys know binary, right? A red light is on (1), an empty light is off (0).

The bottom row represents 1's, the next row up is 2's, the next row is 4's and the top row is 8's.

Then columns. The actual version has six columns. The first two are the hours, next two are minutes, last two seconds.

All you have to do is add up the values of the on lights and convert into denary. :)

I'll post a link to the swf in a minute. :beam:

ooh, i like it. is it going to be flash or html. it should def. be flash, it'd be awsome.

Kitiara
July 24th, 2003, 04:21 PM
It's a combination (or it will be) of HTML, Flash AS and PHP. :)

I've already coded the PHP shoutbox (minus dodgy humour), but the web server doesn't support it yet, so I have to wait. Otherwise it's be on the site already. :) Stuff like the clock, menu etc will be Flash, and the scrollboxes are probably HTML and JS.

Is there a problem with the clock, Soul? :beam:

Now there's something cool!Tricky clock there! I also like the messages in the shoutbox :P ! hey I think the messages in the shoutbox should be in reverse! So the last person who submitted a messsage comes first... not vice versa! Nice selection of fonts there!
I like it very much!

I've never seen that site, no... 'll have to give it the once over. :)

And thanks for the comments guys. :) How are you getting along with the clock on page 1? :)

*cough* It's really obvious and easy to use. Don't you guys agree? *cough*

The site's looking good Kit :thumb: (well, the planned site). It certainly does spice up the original design and I think the shoutbox would be a cool addition (/me is quite a big fan of shoutboxes even though some people are just hopeless when it comes to spamming them :P).

Am I the only person here geeky enough to think the binary clock is a cool thing? :P

I like shoutboxes too. :) Plus I wanted to see if I could code some decent PHP. :beam:

i donno, its cool and all, but i still dont get it! lol. 1-2-4-8? what happend the the other numbers? and i thought binary was 00010010111110101 or that kinda thing?

the best thing is teh header, that looks great. i like the shout box idea, beats a forum which takes up to much space. i would have it go newest to oldest though.

binary is the numbers but when you convert it to normal you gotta muliply it. the first number is multiplied by 1, the second is by 2, the third by 4, the fourth by 8 and so on.

so... 10 in binary would be 2 because 0*1 is 0 and 1*2 is 2 then 2+0 is 2.

Kitiara
July 25th, 2003, 03:53 AM
Yeah, this guy has it... :) Although binary is a series of 1's and 0's, the light's each represent either a 1 or a 0.

So as a basic example...

8 4 2 1 (units)

1 1 0 1 (binary)

This means that the binary number represents an 8, a 4 and 1 one added together, which is 13. So 1101 is the binary equivalent of 13 in base 10. :)

If you all do a search on the Net I'm sure you can find a better explanation, but rest assured, that my clock <i>works</i> and is accurate. :bad:

Shall I confuse everyone now by going into hexadecimal? :P

abzoid
July 25th, 2003, 04:24 AM
I think the binary clock is cool, and even knew how to read it before the explanation. Bring on the hex, and toss in a little octal for good measure. I wax nostalgic for the "good ol' days" where we actually did a little coding in binary, octal, and hexadecimal.

I know, I know, I'm marching to a whole 'nother band. :)

Nice site layout Kit, carry on.......

Kitiara
July 25th, 2003, 04:31 AM
You're not the only one. :) I was taught binary, hex and octal for GSCE Computer Studies about 10 years ago, and I still remember it. :)

Anyway, thanks for the comments guys. :) I think I'm probably going to go with this design now, though I've no idea how long it'll take to piece together... :)

Here's another compliment. But from me!! It looks awesome and stay with the binary clock. Another thing...i read in your news about flash mx 2. What's that all about? Was that a joke in your news section? I search macromedia but i haven't found nothing about it! Where is it?

Kitiara
July 25th, 2003, 11:30 AM
Well, there is meant to be a new update to MX coming out in the not too distant future, but what I wrote on the screen shot was basically just filler, to see how the thing would look. :)

<b>*Guiltily wonders how many people she's sent hunting Macromedia's site*</b>

Kitiara
July 25th, 2003, 03:39 PM
Yes it will, have no fear. :) It's Friday night, any plans I had for going down the pub have fallen through thanks to my totally disorganised friends (honestly, men! :P ) so I'm having a drawing evening. :beam:

Thanks for the comments as well guys, it's much appreciated. :) Since everyone seems to like it, I'm going to go with this layout etc. Hopefully should be a lot more interactive and all that the placeholder at the moment. :)

July 25th, 2003, 03:50 PM
yay! i have the header done for my site, just have to do the rest :P i cant wait to see this though! you dont have PHP on your server? that stinks! www.dr2.net one of the best plans around! and for you guys its like £20 a year right?

Kitiara
July 25th, 2003, 03:56 PM
Well, I'm paying $25 a year for the name and 50 meg of space, which isn't too bad. But I never thought to check for PHP support... :sure:

I've got all this great stuff that I can't run!

mdipi
July 25th, 2003, 04:00 PM
i am telling you though, i got the value plan for $15 bucks last year! it had a little less of the bandwith and space (only 100 megs, but i can but grade both for $5 eac). now its $40 but the extra stuff, uptime, and support make it worth it! lol i got stuff that i will never use, but if i wannted to i could. thats what i like most.

that clock is freaky. maybe you shouldn't label it and let visitors wonder what the hell it is. ;) very nice design and layout though - i like it, me.:)
