Here are a lot of the more well put and explanatory threads Ive been involved with over the years. There are a lot more over in WH but their new site blows and the search is a pain to use, so I probably wont be posting much from there ;) otherwise they come from all over the place.

I really thought I had more out there on the basics of prototypes :-\ I couldnt find any though. Probably all in WH :sigh: Maybe Ill spout something out on DPs prototype thread and add it to the list here....

and anyone is welcome to tutorialize any of these, Im just too lazy (or dont have the time, or dont feel like I have the time) :)

Really cool Sen, and you ought to write about watchers, I really find them useful. :)

By the way Sen, do you mind if you write another "explanatory thread" about bitwise operators? I found out they are pretty much useful with colour transformation. I searched for some info though, but there weren't really good explanations around that scope. :-\

senocular
07-27-2003, 02:26 PM
oooh I have one floating around on watchers, I think on as.org, Ill go dig that up.

I can do one on bitwise too. The little color one on wh is probably the closest thing I have on here on them so far :-\ (lol though it explains absolutely nothing about them) Ill get around to doing one sooner or later ;)

One thing though: all the posts about OOP are really interesting, but they don't really make sense taken one by one. What I mean to say is this: it would be awesome if you could take all those posts, and rearrange them into a big tutorial :beam: if it's not too much to ask

Sen's tutorial, from what i saw so far, gets much more in-depth than bit-101's tutorial =)

Scootman
08-10-2003, 06:44 PM
ya sorry i hadnt really checked it out much before i posted... didnt realize how in depth he got with it... i assumed it was a basic 3d type thing

it seems like that thread on as.org can be broken up into like 3 or 4 tutes almost... like a basic 3d rotation like on bit-101... then a mouse responsive one.... and like one with 3d movement dealing with the focal point and all that...and rotating the points and being able to move them like on as.org.... i dunno but if you had only 1 tute for that it would be very very long if you want to cover everything in that thread

i just want to thank Sen for all those links on this.thread

i read 'how actionscript thinks' last night and lots of things went 'click' in my head (which is quite worrying, but i'm having it looked at)

he's spent a great amount of time on what he does and has enough material there to make a book out of it all

I recently bought Colin Moock's ActionScript for Flash MX 2nd Edition. It is my third addition to my Flash library.

What I'd like to know is, when are you going to find time to write your own ActionScript book senocular? It would be a must have in the order of Moock's IMO!!!

I'd be willing to pay for a handy desk reference to your infinite Flash and AS knowledge. (I shelled 50 bucks for Moock's....your's, to me, would be just as valuble!!!)

P.S. Is it possible you already have...??? If so where can I find it...???....If not, I'll be starting a thread to get you published....Where can I send you my money????:)

lostinbeta

Colin: The list is more populated, but I still find Sens list more impressive since all the links are to threads where he himself has answered the questions in great depth and detail. CyanBlues list is just a list of useful threads which is all well and good, and just as useful, but the links in it really serve no purpose in a thread called "Best of Senocular" :beam:

Thanks for sharing though, some useful information in there :thumb:

Senocular,

I was checking out your Dynamic Waves with Mouse.fla and was wondering if you would have any feedback on possibly making it appear (graphic) like the ocean. I am going to do a Surfing website and your effect would be really nice.

Maybe an image mask? Not sure..

Let me know! Thanks!

Hi ,
I have looked around and not found an answer for this but Im sure its out there. I am trying to create a flash mx 2004 that grabs blocks of cdata from and xml file and dumps them into a dynamic text field that has a css formatting set to it. I will have several pages of text fields that I hope I can populate with the xml feed. Problem is, after the first frame, I cant carry any values forward to different pages. It just doesnt show up . undefined in trace (myText3); or whatever text field after the first one on the first page. It works for the first page only where all the assignment code is place. I cant seem to get global variables to work either. Any suggestions? I have to fix this problem soon and am tearing my hair out.

Thanks

//init TextArea component

myText.html = true;
myText.wordWrap = true;
myText.multiline = true;
myText.label.condenseWhite=true;
myText.vScrollPolicy = "off";
myText.borderStyle = 'none';
/******************************/
myText2.html = true;
myText2.wordWrap = true;
myText2.multiline = true;
myText2.label.condenseWhite=true;
myText2.vScrollPolicy = "off";
myText2.borderStyle = 'none';
/******************************/
myText3.html = true;
myText3.wordWrap = true;
myText3.multiline = true;
myText3.label.condenseWhite=true;
myText3.vScrollPolicy = "off";
myText3.borderStyle = 'none';

//load css
cityStyle = new TextField.StyleSheet();
cityStyle.load("kungfu.css");
myText.styleSheet = cityStyle;
myText2.styleSheet = cityStyle;
myText3.styleSheet = cityStyle;

/******************************/
//load in XML
column1 = new XML();
column1.ignoreWhite = true;
column1.load("citydata.xml");
column1.onLoad = function(success)
{
if(success)
{
trace(colTwo);

colOne = this.firstChild.childNodes[0].childNodes[1].firstChild.nodeValue;
colTwo = this.firstChild.childNodes[0].childNodes[2].firstChild.nodeValue;
colThree = this.firstChild.childNodes[0].childNodes[3].firstChild.nodeValue;
myText.text = _root.colOne;
myText2.text = _root.colTwo;

myText3.text = _global.colThree;

}
}

1st point, this thread shouldn't be here ~mod?

provided you are reading in the xml correctly (I dont know the format of the XML file) I think your mistake is the varaible assignment. Try this:
_root.colOne = ....
_root.colTwo = ...
_root.colThree = ...
myText.text = _root.colOne;
myText2.text = _root.colTwo;
myText3.text = _root.colThree;

This way you assign the value to the _root var and read it from the same _ _root var.
Hope this helps,
Scarab
